Today is the hardest day of my life. I have come to the decession of having to put down my 9 year old pei from this disease of shar pei fever. Last Friday, she was her normal funny self, playing and eating, by Sat. morn, she was sick. I knew she had the sickness again. Yes, Mei Lei had a high fever back in 99. With the help from our vet and antiobotics, she was well and back to normal in a couple of days. I have been scared to death that she would get it again and that her kidney's would fail. I took her to the vet on Monday and the vet thought she had a kidney infection, but with blood work and urine specimen, it proved to be wrong. It was the Shar Pei fever he told me. My heart aches and all I have done for the last 5 days is cried. I have been going to the vet's and visiting her every day. One minute I think she is better, than the next day, she is worse. I saw her yesterday afternoon, and she was so weak, she looked right through me. It broke my heart. My husband said it was up to me to make the decession of putting her down. Today, I have to let her go. She has never known pain or being in a cage. I rubbed her nose through the cage yesterday and told her that I loved her and thanked her for being part of my life. My vet is a wonderful man, and is trying everything he can think of to help her. I really appreciate him and the staff there. I have another shar pei at home and he is totally lost with out her. I am going to get him tested and to make sure he is alright. I wish they can find a cure for this. All I can say to people with pei's is to have blood work done and have a urine specimen done every year, even if the animal appears healthy. I thought everything was going well with Mei Lei and that I was right on top of things. WRONG!! Take care and God Bless.
