Ok, as most of you know, JC superstar was showing at wharton High School on thursday, friday, and saturday. Well, me and rusty went to the friday showing, and I figured I'd "fill you in" on how it went.
First of all, I had never seen Jesus Christ Superstar, and had never heard any of the songs (minus one, that was at district competitions last year). So, this was a totally new experience for me. Rusty, on the other hand, owns the soundtrack, and has seen the movie, but had never seen it live. So, it was kinda new for both of us, but rusty was able to compare it to the movie. My impressions? Well, first of all, the fact that they actually get to use their theatre was obvious from the start. Their sets were great! The "theme" i guess was a temple, with large pillars everywhere. There was a four-five foot rise in the middle of the stage, and above that, there was a catwalk that served as the "second" floor, with visible ladders running up to it. The play was full of action, and was beautifullly choreographed, with people always moving, entering, exiting, and keeping you interested. Another plus was the way they used the audience. The chorus (which was huge, i'd guess somewhere between 20-40 people) sang some of their parts from behind the audience, and overall, made you feel "in the musical". There was 2 distinct parts where a character actually entered the scene from the audience, (once was Jesus, and once was Judas) where you just couldn't keep your eyes off of them. It was very well done.
The music was amazing. I've never heard the soundtrack before, but after going to see it, I found myself wanting to go out and buy it (or download it... hehe). And what topped it off was that rusty said that the music didn't do it justice. Apparently, the actual soundtrack was even better. There were no "breaks" so to say, meaning that the whole musical was... musical. It wasn't like in cinderella where sometimes people would just talk, and then break out into song. The whole musical was the story being told from song-to-song.
As for the talent, they were all great! Me and Rusty both felt that the guy playing jesus was a little too soft-spoken, but he was still an amazing singer. All together, I found myself respecting the wharton theatre department. I mean, they have some real good talent down there. Of course, they wouldn't stand a chance against US, but, of course, who would? (hehe ;) )
So, overall, I was impressed, and felt that the play was well worth my 9 dollars. I left the auditorium with the songs in my head, and a smile on my face. And I enjoyed myself, and that is what theatre is all about, right?
