Hey for anyone who was not able to make it to the College Classic. In the Open division Next beat TAMU 1 in the finals in 2 games. The intense competition took place in the sweat box, where 11 extremely talented teams gathered for the collegiate division. TAMU II had a great showing in pool play with a record of 5-3; they came up short in the playoffs losing to Ice Cold.

The story of the tournament was an unknown team called the Swaggies, they stumbled out of the gate losing their first match to an extremely talented TAMU II, but would did not drop another game until the finals. The Swaggies were able to dominate teams with their unusual warm up routines, along with screaming and dancing in the middle of the match. The phrase Payday was often belted prior to pounding the off the 10 foot line. After pool play the Swaggies were seeded #1 and would go on to beat Baylor in 2 to advance to the finals.

In the finals they met SMU a team with a lot of height and hit very hard. The first Game SMU came out strong and beat the Swaggies 25-19. The Swaggies were able to regroup and overcome SMU in the second game w/ amazing defense and strong hitting. After the second game loss SMU realized they were no match for the Swaggies and were mentally destroyed as the Swaggies dominated the Final game 15-8.

The Swaggies had never played together before but had team chemistry as if they had been playing for years. The team was well organized with each player wearing a different colored shirt and only 3 of the players with numbers. Their outside hitters were Andy David and Adam Maloney, they displayed great hitting along with incredible defense and passing. The majority of the defensive ups were by the agile Hunter Layton, he intimidated the other team’s hitters with his one knee pad, and ability to fly. The middles were a dominate force that consisted of Jeff Erickson and Eric “Payday” Ojedas. Due to the amazing serving of the Swaggies the competition was hardly ever able to run middles, therefore Jeff and Eric were not able to show off their dominant middle block. They made up for this with their hitting as the Swaggies were able to run their middles at all times with nothing but nails coming from serve receive. At right side for the Swaggies was Kevin he was the secret weapon that other teams did not anticipate, his jump serve was unorthodox yet very effective when it managed to stay in bounds. He had a unique way of intimidating with his headband that was made out of tape and his robotic dance moves in between plays. Last but not least was the setter Geoffrey “Butta Hands” Schiffli, his hands were as smooth as silk all day placing the ball with pin point accuracy.

Overall it was a great tournament and I would like to thank everyone who came and played. Everything ran smoothly and all tournaments were done at a decent hour. Hopefully we can have the same happen again at the V-day Classic. Now the Swaggies will not be so unknown.
