Watler is a folk hero, highly honored in Belize for keeping Belizean Creole culture alive at a time when it was most unpopular to do so. Born in Monkey River, a small seaside village in southern Belize, Central America, John Watler came from humble beginnings. From the wild lands of Monkey River, his poverty burdened family depended on agriculture to survive. Against all odds he fell into the hands of a headmaster who recognized and encouraged his writing talent. Through sheer resiliency and determination, he has succeeded as an author. Watler is currently considered one of Belize’s best writers of plays and fiction, and is known as Belize’s own Mark Twain. He has gained national acclaim for his energetic performances and is a favorite among school children because of his animated ability in bringing the power, grace and beauty of literature to life. Watler has been contracted by Belize’s Ministry of Education to visit schools nationwide, to inspire, motivate and lecture on Belizean culture. “Mr. Watler came to our school as a stranger and left as a hero,” wrote a Belizean elementary school principal whose remark is shared by high and elementary schools nationwide. John Alexander Watler’s books include Cry Among Rain Clouds (2001), Sea Lotto (2004) and De Works (2003). Monologues include “Wapey's Letter", “Onefoot was Pushed", “Brer Anansi Escape to Nomo-Nomo”, and other folklore comedy.
