In the shadow of the Taj Mahal

Rose-encrusted sky twinkles a million diamonds
shining down through moonbeams of desert dust
the cold monument to love long gone stands tall
ivory marble illuminated under the moonlit sky
once adorned by a thousand precious jewels
shakes off the dust of the surrounding streets
such opulence cannot be so cruelly contaminated
by the pitiful poverty and the stench of death
as innocent babies play in sewage lined gutters
and the elderly pull over their cardboard covers
yet another hot day and wet night on the streets
but they should be grateful should they not
for they rest in the shadow of the Taj Mahal.
