Subject: Can't Sleep

Can’t sleep



If I stand in the rain to get wet
with thickening smoke
watching feet point skyward
mouths open as sinews tighten.

Burn them all, but it’s too late
blue eyed pork flaming
a flocking by forklift truck
like sunflowers the Van Gough.

I dream of a train off the rails
with a cat that talks
breaths purred like a friend
lapping it up as the brakes fail.

Prelude many faces screaming
sunken eyes blurring
rising tide embraces more
not knowing why I’m smiling.

While children sleep silently
suffer no more of this
like that good book says
on Sundays the fools can rest.

Will we walk through a field
and lay down to die
or float like dead fish?
on the surface we might skate.

If the telephone rings aloud
perhaps it all stops
then I could go to sleep,
or watch it all fade into dawn.
