Time Seeps

As time seeps into the skin
of whatever this was;
I see no way to repair
what I have broken.

Alone in the drift,
make short shrift
of my words, toss
them out to sea.
How many times
have I stood at ocean's
door, sinking to the floor?

I'm nearly up to eighty
but no, I wasn't competing
with myself.
There is no war to be fought,
nor won.

The longer we wait,
the harder it comes.

Maybe there will be
a friendship to salvage.
