Subject: Divorce

Divorce

The clothes are warm in my hands,
Straight from the dryer.
I fold them, a mindless task,
As I stare out the window
Towards the fields beyond.
The trees are drenched,
November rains have seen to that;
Not a leaf is left hanging.
Brown grass and brown dirt
Clutter my mind with regret;
Like the earth my life is changing.
I smell the death outside,
Moist and clinging like mud;
My hands bring his shirt to my face
And I inhale,
Searching for a remnant of his scent.
If I had known today would come
The laundry would be left undone,
And I would be safely wrapped
In any reminder of him I could find.
But like the trees my world is barren
Suddenly taken by force;
Were the poor leaves unaware, or had they a clue
The cruel winter brought divorce...?
