Listening to silence




Gulls crying fades slowly almost haunting in absence

between outcrops narrow passage beckons
for twenty five years my feet have not walked here
yet familiarity cuts through the undergrowth.

Arriving finds gnarled half living oak still standing

all around old roots desperately anchored
where acorns fell saplings now bursting skywards
feeding upon decomposition of parenthood.

Lightning once tore the living heart from deep inside

above that dark hollow I carved my name
then life had innocence and shone more brightly
surprisingly after all this time I read again.

That tree although asked never offered direct advice

growing wiser perhaps listens more closely
for dying has not yet curtailed this aging onlooker…
comparing hearts, mine still beats within.
