Yeah, in Europe people aren't as sue-crazy . . . so places with toxic icky green gooey radioactive (that's an exaggeration) water are totally out in the open where it would be easy for some stupid person to fall in.

I LOVED the Roman baths--I thought they were so cool. And I'm glad they didn't have safety walls or other things up because that would have limited the ambiance of the place.

I have a picture of a quote on the wall a the baths that is really kind of silly--I took the picture because it struck me as a little over the top, but very much in the Shakespearean philosophizing mode. Here's the quote:

"Life is a bath. All paddle about in it's great pool."
- Seneca, 1st century AD

I suppose I shouldn't be critical of Seneca because he did live long before Shakespeare's "all the world is a stage" metaphor (so it wasn't like he was trying to copy Shakespeare) . . . I just think the stage metaphor works a lot better than the bath metaphor. I mean, really, I assume he was referring to the Roman baths and even though they're big, they're still a small confined space with germs and stuff (oh, this was before the germ theory). And people go to baths to refresh and wash themselves--whereas on a stage people are acting out every possible aspect of human life. The stage metaphore just makes more sense to me.

And I'm babbling so I'll stop. :)
