Joe dropped off Charles Simic to the University Inn, and came home. He said they pretty muched just talked about his (Simic's) previous visits to Athens and Ohio. Back in the day when poetry was more popular there was a sponsored circuit reading where poets would drive all around and read a couple of times each day in various locations--kind of like a poetry tour (like a "music tour"). Anyway, Simic did this and spent some time reading in and around Ohio.

He is now 69 years old, more mellow than he used to be, I'm sure, and more interested in getting back to the hotel so he could take a nap rather than going to the opening night dinner/social at OU. He used to be known as a drinker, but Joe says he thinks now he's more of a napper.

Joe brought up hearing him read at BYU about 6 years ago. He said, "Yes. Provo is a strange place. Interesting." Not in a bad way, just that it made an impression on him that he won't forget. He mentioned a "fancy dinner" at the University President's house, with fancy china and chapmagne glass filled with a sparkling peach colored beverage--he said that he didn't know what it was, and waited until the evening was almost over before tasting it--thinking that it looked like some kind of chardonay or something--but it was peach soda. Kind of a funny story that he would remember and bother to tell Joe about. Oh well.

He's retired now, just loosely associated with U of New Hampshire, and mainly writing and traveling as guest speaker, etc.

He mostly asked Joe about Ohio and Athens, and (not surprisingly) didn't care to ask Joe about Joe.
