Recently my mom and her friend were chatting about their daughters (the friend has some single young adult daughters too) and my mom asked if the younger daughter, Kristen is dating much. Kristen is brunette, cute girl, but a little shy and highly intelligent. The friend said, “actually, she is now. I read in a magazine recently that women with some blonde in their hair are more approachable, so we got some highlights in Kristen’s hair and guys are asking her out now!” Kristen is just graduating from the U and starting a masters program back east in the fall and her mom is totally sold on this highlights thing.
Anyway, my mom tells us that story and I think it’s hilarious, the rest of my sisters are rolling their eyes, but my dad is like “hey, maybe we need to try this!” Picture my dad for a moment: very traditional LDS, he and my mom got married at age 21, and he now has 3 daughters over the age of 21 who are not married, with 2 more coming up. He is completely perplexed by this whole LDS dating scene and the apparent lack of decent men out there. (Oh, and both my parents are totally frugal and don’t pay for extras – even my 13 year old sister is on a budget and if she wants clothes, etc it has to come out of that allowance)
So we’ve been telling people at church, neighbors, etc this story about the highlights and we’re all laughing about it. I’m picturing my dad hauling all his daughters into the salon every other month and trying to negotiate a “volume discount” or something on all these highlights. And Sunday night at dinner the topic came up again – and my dad announces he really will pay for all of us to get highlights. He wants to conduct an experiment. We have our hypothesis, we don’t exactly have a very large sample size (and I’m not sure we’re really controlling for other factors) but in any case, my dad has now agreed to pay for highlights for several months. And I’m like “sweet! I haven’t done highlights since college but if someone else is paying . . .” (plus I’m getting more and more grey hairs that are coming faster than I can pluck them out! Kiersten, (the sister directly after me) is still rolling her eyes and just thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. But I think she might do it.
So I try to push the envelope a bit and announce that I’ve also heard women who buy lots of new shoes all the time are also very approachable . . . so I suggest that my dad should also start paying for shoes. AND, as long as we’re on the topic of dating/approachability, etc, my dad could REALLY help us out by paying for boob jobs since none of my sisters and I have been well endowed . . . . Unfortunately those two items did not go over as well. Hmmm. Too bad.
I will keep you all posted on the “experiment” :)
