Emily,
The all day kindergarten trend is spreading all over the country now. Utah has been slow to pick it up, precisely for the reason you mentioned: parents who would rather have home life be the more dominant impact on their children's lives in those early years rather than whatever is being taught at school - novel concept. :) Right now Utah's legislature is debating an optional all day kindergarten plan, which I think is a good idea. The research on all day kindergarten does show that for low income and minority kids (the "at risk" populations) all day kindergarten really helps them get prepared for the rest of their schooling. But for parents who spend time with their children and teach them all the things that were traditionally taught at home, it doesn't make sense to send them off to school all day.

I've actually been communicating with a group in Ohio called School Choice Ohio to get ideas on voucher implementation. SCO helps promote a couple different voucher programs in Ohio - I believe right now they just have a voucher for kids in failing public schools and a voucher for children with autism. But if the trend continues they should be able to expand those to a broader eligibility. I'll keep you posted - when Ruby gets to be school age it would be worth looking into
