My favorite moment, or thing, about the movie was this. River has these horrible nightmares, she doesn't want to sleep. At one point she says something to her brother about "Don't make me do it" ("it" being go to sleep to dream her nightmares). Then she says something about how she has to carry the memories of all these people, of this horrible event, but THEY'RE NOT HER MEMORIES, and yet she has to carry them, and she carries them ALONE. This seems to be what is ailing her the most--and so (Da da da da...) they go to Miranda to get to the root of this.
Once they go to Miranda, and she sees in person what she saw in her dreams, it is the height of her misery, BUT, all the other crew members also see, including her brother. And they also see the hologram explanation of what happened, etc.
Once River is able to share these memories with other people, once they are able to know the horror and misery and sadness of what has happened, River is on the mend.
It made me think of how as Latter Day Saints we mourn with those who mourn, and how it makes our burden seem lighter, and this is what happened for River. In fact, River seems almost completely healed--well, still very odd, but no longer as conflicted and volatile as before.
That is my favorite thing about the movie.
I thought a lot about similarities with "The Giver" and even Star Wars.
Here are some of my responses to what you wrote about.
>"I don't belong there any more
>than you do. I'm a monster. What I do is evil, I
>have no illusions about that. But it must be done."
>He knows he's evil. And yet he's so thoroughly
>convinced that this is a necessary evil.
-During this part of the movie that you mentioned, I actually thought of all the religious wars in the history of the world, done in the name of God, but evil. More recently of course was my thought of both Israeli and Palistinian wars, suicide bombs, etc. And also terrorist groups who terrorize in the name of "Allah".
>From the villain to the
>good guys, no one is black and white. These
>characters are not caricatures. I love that.
-I thought about this too. Sort of like how Operative's motive is to rid the world of sin, except he himself is sinful in his evil actions (duh, like you mentioned above). And how Mal says something sarcastically about how he loves his sin too much and wouldn't want to live in a sinless world, even though he is the "good guy" he is not perfect.
