A student plagiarized a chunk of his research proposal. He didn't do it on purpose. Well, what I mean is, he wasn't trying to be sneaky, and say, "Hahahah! My dumb teacher will never know I didn't write this, and I'll get an easy A!" He really just was stupid. He either put in the quotes there and forgot to quote them, or just didn't know what he was doing was wrong. Either way, it's frustrating---I don't know how that kind of thing can happen. Duh!

Anyway, I met with him today. He was FREAKED OUT. (Can't say I blame him.) I gave him 24 hours to re-write, which is my policy when this kind of thing happens. (Unfortunately, it happened quite often last year, so I had to develop a policy.) If he does it on his re-write, he gets a zero. Here's hoping it doesn't come to that. I hate giving zeroes, even when a student deserves one. (Oddly enough, however, I have no problem giving an F at the end of the semester. Go figure.)
