I know, it's the sheer unprofessionalism of it that kills me. Yes, we all understand how difficult it is to balance research and teaching. We've heard it all before. And yes, we're all busy too and we can sympathize. But come on! To basically say, "I don't have time to teach this class" and then give this as an excuse? It's so ridiculous!!
I sent it to both my parents, and both of them agree with you. My dad thinks she's put herself in a pretty good position to be jobless, based on the kind of evaluations she's most likely to get. My mom thinks, should this get to the upper-ups, she'd not have a chance for tenure, and that she shouldn't have a chance for tenure. Both my mom and dad think I should send it to the dean.
Problem is, I don't know that the dean would care. Honestly. He'd probably be like, "Yep! Research important! Classes, not so much." Okay, so I don't know that, but it's kind of the vibe we've all been getting since we've been here. They've even told us---as GRADUATE students---that we should be more worried about going to conferences and getting published than we should about our teaching and classes. In fact, people who have gone to more conferences got better scholarships than people who have not, all other things being equal.
I mean, yes, I understand that academia does some stupid things (it's a main reason I don't want to be a professor---the whole Publish or Perish thing is really stupid to me. You can put out crappy publications regularly and not care about your teaching, so your students suffer. Or, you can care about teaching, and work hard on getting good publications out there every so often. Oh, except you can't do that second option in academia. But the dean's played the game. I dunno if he'll read it as "unprofessional" or as "honest---deal with it."
It's so wimpy, but I wish I could send it to the upper-ups anonymously, you know?
It's really obnoxious---I could do what we're doing in this class on my own, for free, and have the same result. And I'm paying her how much money? Argh!
