I usually don't approach elderly people because normally they're to cranky to watch an effect. If I do want to atract some spectator's I start off doing a few card flourishes. This naturally catches the spectator's eyes and they are amazed by the talent. They approach me and I start doing effects. Blaine did this in Vertigo when they showed a timelapse camera. After about 5 minutes he had a groub of about 25 people. He started off with only one little boy watching him.
