Well, you know, experiences are different ^^. I only really know one heavy downloader who doesn't buy too much (mainly because he has no money and no job). Most other people I know either download and buy or just purchase the domestic titles (I fit into the last one).

Of course, neither of these experiences tell anything, do they ... ^^

In some respects I agree - there is a less need for fansubbing now then there has been in the past. I am not certain that there is *no* need, however. I still think that fansubbers can use their powers for good.

In my case, I will not purchase a show that I have not seen. I guess that I am lucky that there is JAC and Rentertainment around - without those I don't think that I would be purchasing any anime at all ^^. At the same time, Cartoon Network does not show anything that I am too interested in. Of course, this may change in the future.

Some things that could (and do) affect fansubbers:

1. Shows appearing simultaneously in the US and Japan. If instead of downloading the latest Inuyasha episode, all you had to do is turn on Cartoon Network, I think that people would be less willing to go to fansubs.

2. As much as I think subs are better then dubs, I think that most people prefer dubs. In fact (although I think it kind of sucks), there are a decent amount of people who will not watch subs under any circumstances. So these people will not be downloading digisubs.

3. The ability to rent/buy things off of television (similar to how some of the satellite television runs things). If I can access (and rent) the entirety of Blockbusters movie catalog from my home, then I would probably be less willing to hunt around on an IRC channel for some anime show.

4. Similar to point 1, if the domestic companies can get their releases out quickly, then I think that people viewing fansubs will decrease. I mean, one reason why people watch fansubs is because there is no domestic release. For example, people have told me that Witch Hunter Robin is the greatest thing sinced sliced bread. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. I have no idea since I have no way of actually watching the show (since I don't watch digisubs outside of JAC). But if I really did want to watch it, the only way to get an english translated version would be through a digisub.

Of course, combining all these would be the biggest deathblow to fansubbing. If I want to watch the latest dubbed episode of Inuyasha NOW, then of course fansubbing won't fly ... ^^ Maybe of these things will happen, I do not know. But I wouldn't be surprised ...
