Thanks, now I actually *can* be brief, since you took the hard part. :) I have only a few things I want to respond to from Dave's post:

Yes, I did realize that you were being very abstract, but as I actually said in my post that got eaten, I think your philosophy is *too* abstract and fails to address the reality that Dena so eloquently describes.

Owning ideas does not result in people keeping them to themselves. IP rights are in place to ensure that people are rewarded for creating and sharing them. History bears this out as well--almost all of the technology and art we enjoy today is or was at some point protected by patent/copyright law.

I didn't mean that there is no reason at all to innovate or create art without IP protection. By incentive I meant... external justifcation, to use psychology jargon. Of course people will still innovate and create art for personal satisfaction, but in a captitalist society, IP protection is needed for people, and especially companies, to be able to devote themselves to these activities and still prosper.
