I actually always recommend people NOT watch the first episode first. Like you said, the first episode takes place after all the others, and I have no idea why they decided to present it that way in the anime. It's not in that order in the manga. And if you're paying attention and have a decent memory (thankfully I wasn't/didn't), the "first" episode gives away things that happen later in the series. On top of that, it's a pretty crappy episode in my opinion. And there's absolutely no reason at all that you need to watch it first.

Plus, it's not even a good indicator of the violence in the majority of the series because the nature of the violence is fundamentally different. I don't wanna be any more specific than that because it would give things away that I'm upset were given away in the first episode. However, I don't really remember if the 2nd/3rd episodes give a good inidication of the level of violence through most of the series. I'm gonna be buying the series when the whole thing is out and I can buy it all together, and I'll post my thoughts then. :)
