That reminds me of the book Stupid White Men by Michael Moore, in which he has statistics showing that many American college students know next to nothing about the US Civil War (what century, etc.), but 99% of them know who Beavis and Butthead are.

Remember, UIUC is a top school. It's possible that more than 50% of UIUC students can tell you in what century the Civil War took place, but that's not the case in most colleges.

Moore's point is that American kids these days know tons about pop culture but very little about history. The US is a TV nation, not a book nation.

It's both amusing and disappointing at the same time.
