Ethan sat behind his desk frustrated. His thoughts were millions of miles away from his work. He was supposed to be working on a case, but all he could think about was Theresa Weiland.

“Why is she in my thoughts? Damn it Ethan, concentrate.” He said to himself.

But he couldn’t. All he could think about were those eyes, and those soft looking lips.

He drank a couple of sips of water and rubbed his hands through his hair. He was lost in her beauty, and it was hard to control his thoughts.

“I wish I could take her away to some exotic island and make love to her all night long. Ugh, but she’s married, what am I saying? Ooh, but that has never stopped me before. I’ve had all types of women.” Ethan snickered to himself.

“I think this one is different though. I can’t get her out of my head. This is not like me. It’s not like me at all. I’m a player. I can’t be tied down to just one woman.”

Ethan continued to talk to himself and stood to take a few strides around the room to get Theresa out of his head.

He then sat back down and buzzed for his usual temporary secretary, while Amy was out, to come inside.

Miss. Smith came rushing in with a pencil and pad.

“Yes sir, what can I do for you?”

“Umm, Daphne, have you ever heard of a fashion designer named Theresa Weiland?”

“Oh my goodness yes!” The temp screamed out. “Do you know her? Will you get her autograph for me? Oh my goodness, I love her clothes line!”

Daphne couldn’t help but to get excited when her boss mentioned Theresa’s name. Even though she only could afford one garment from her line, she still claimed her as her favorite designer.

“Calm yourself Daphne.” Ethan giggled. “I met her last night while I was out.”

“Oh sir, tell me, is she as beautiful in person as she is in all the fashion magazines.

Ethan’s mind quickly went back to last night’s dinner. She was absolutely breath taking in that dress she wore. He nearly stumbled running out the room to get a closer look at her.

“Sir, sir. Did you hear me?”

“Oh Daphne, yes, well, I’ve never seen her in magazines before, but she is lovely in person.”

“Oh, I bet she is sir. She’s as my grandmother use to say, the cat’s meow.”

Ethan laughed right out loud at that 1920’s saying.

“Yes Daphne, I would say she is just that.”

“It’s so terrible what happened to her husband though.”

Daphne’s face went from glee to gloom within seconds.

Ethan however was curious about what happened.

“Umm, Daphne, what are you talking about?” He inquired.

“Well, I heard she was back here in Harmony to regroup because her husband was killed in a terrible accident back in New York City.”

“You don’t say.” Ethan said very attentively.

“Honestly sir, you don’t read the paper much do you?”

Ethan gave a rather unsure look at her.

“Go on with the story Daphne.” He said now impatiently.

“Well, reporters say it might have been homicide, and they questioned Mrs. Weiland for days and days. They thought maybe she was the one who killed him, or had him killed.”

Daphne paused a minute.

“Yes, go on.” Ethan said quickly.

“Well, seems though Mrs. Weiland’s business was falling apart, and there was a rather large amount to Mr. Weiland’s life insurance. They eventually called the death an accident and let her go with no further questions. Now she’s back here in Harmony to recuperate I suppose.”

“I see, I see.” Ethan rubbed his hands through his hair once again before sitting down at his desk.

“Will that be all sir?” Daphne said looking at him.

“Yes, Daphne, that will do. Oh, wait, before you go, do you know Miss Weiland’s maiden name?”

“Umm, I think it’s Lo..Lopez… Lopez-Fitzgerald.”

“Thank you Daphne, that will be all. Please hold all my calls, and cancel all my appointments for today. I’m stepping out for a bit. I’ll be back before closing.”

“Yes sir.” Daphne turned around and went back to her desk.

“Lopez-Fitzgerald.” Ethan said to himself. “I’ve never heard of a Lopez-Fitzgerald. However, I think maybe my family once had a housekeeper with that name.”

After Ethan made a few more phone calls, he rushed out of his office to see if he could find out more about the enchanting Theresa Weiland.

“Could she actually be a murderer?” He said to himself. Then he erase the thought out of his head and said he would get to know her first, and then find out the whole truth behind the mystery.

Theresa stood in Whitney’s office at the hospital and rubbed her hands across her belly.

Whitney walked up behind her with a gleam.

“You can’t believe it can you?” She said placing an arm around her friend.

Theresa slowly shook her head.

“No Whit, I can’t believe it. I’m going to have a baby.”

There was such sadness in her eyes not at all a rejoicing feeling like most women have when they find out they are pregnant. But it was a reason behind Theresa’s despondency. She didn’t want to enjoy this moment without her husband. It almost seemed unfair to celebrate.

“Theresa, I can’t stand here and tell you how you should be feeling at a time like this, but when I think of your little baby growing inside of you, it makes me feel like Rick’s legacy will live on.”

Theresa began to cry as she heard her dearest friend talk about her husband and unborn child. She wanted so badly to be happy about being pregnant. It’s what her and Rick wanted for so long, and now it’s coming true, only he’s not here to celebrate with her.

“I will try not to be sad Whitney. I love my baby.” She said still rubbing in the area. “I will do whatever it takes to make sure he or she is healthy.”

“Oh, I’m sure you will honey. Besides, there are so many people who love you, and will also love your baby. We are all here if you need us.”

Whitney hugged her friend, and sat her down in the chair next to her desk.

“Okay, do you want to know how far along you are?”

“Of course I do. Can you also tell me what I’m having?”

Whitney laughed at her friend.

“No sweetie, it’s too early to tell right now what you’re having. But I can tell how long you’ve been pregnant.”

Whitney checked the test results that lie on her desk.

“You are exactly six weeks.”

Theresa’s eyes filled up with tears once again as she thought about being pregnant one full week before her husband died. He would’ve flipped at the news, she thought to herself.

“Okay, here’s a prescription of vitamins you’re to take, and my assistant will schedule your next appointment. I’m so happy for you Theresa. Finally a God child I can spoil.” Whitney said laughing.

Theresa hugged her friend once more before leaving for home.

*****************************
The Lopez-Fitzgerald’s doorbell rang twice before Pilar came to answer it. She was busy in the kitchen with Miguel’s children. Their parents had gone away for the weekend, and she was the designated babysitter this time around.

“Coming!” She sang out.

When Pilar opened the door she got the surprise of her life.

“Oh my goodness, Ethan.”

Ethan looked at the woman who seemed to have known him rather personally. She didn’t use his title or his last name.

“Umm, hello.” He said unaware who the woman was. “Does a Theresa Weiland live here?”

Pilar smiled at the young man she used to take care of as a small child.

“Ethan, you don’t remember me do you?”

Ethan looked strangely at the woman.

“No ma’am, forgive me, but should I know you?”

Pilar began to giggle when she thought about her old life as the Crane’s housekeeper. Ethan was always off to boarding school, and probably wouldn’t remember any of the old staff that worked for the family back then.

“I guess you wouldn’t remember me Ethan. I use to work for your family at the mansion years ago. You were just a small boy then.”

“What is your name?” He asked.

“Pilar. Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald.”

Ethan still wasn’t sure who she was, or even if he remembered her. He thought real hard, but nothing rang a bell with him.

“Don’t worry about it sir. It was a long time ago, and like I said, you were just a small boy then, not even in high school.

Oh the fun we use to have when you would come home for spring vacation. I would baked your favorite cookies, and you would hide in the…”

Ethan cut her off as he remembered the rest.

“I would hide in the shed so my grandfather, rest his soul, wouldn’t know I was eating cookies before dinner time.”

“That’s right, you remember.” Pilar beamed.

“Pilar! That was you? You were the one who made sure I had the best times when I came home from school. It’s funny how my grandfather always knew when I had been eating cookies. It was almost like he had a surveillance camera in that old shed behind the house. He would catch me every time.”

Ethan laughed as he remembered his childhood joys at the mansion.

“Pilar, I can’t believe this is you. I remember coming home for spring break when I was in the seventh grade, and my mother told me you no longer worked for the family. I remember running to my room not coming out for the whole week I was there. I thought you didn’t want to be around me anymore.

My mother kept trying to convince me that you didn’t leave because I was a bad child, but I didn’t believe her. Why did you leave Pilar? I never understood why.”

“Well, back then my husband started his own construction company, and I went to work for him as his secretary. I asked your mother about you all the time, and she would always tell me you were fine. I never thought you missed me as much as you did. I’m so sorry I never came back to see you.”

“It’s okay Pilar. I eventually got over it, and grew out of that part of my life. Now I’m a successful young man who doesn’t think about such things anymore.”

Pilar looked at him and could tell that he was so much more different than the boy she fancied all those years ago, but that’s what being a Crane did for you.

Theresa took out her key and sighed thinking how nice it would be to lie down a bit. She wanted to hide herself in her old childhood bedroom and think about her husband, and their unborn child. She couldn’t imagine going through the next seven in a half months of carrying their baby without him.

When she opened the door she was surprised to see the district attorney standing in her living room. She spoke a nonchalant greeting and walked quickly pass to her room.

Ethan looked at Mrs. Lopez-Fitzgerald oddly, wondering what was going on with the beautiful young woman.
