Title: Almost Fatal
Author: DeeCKidd

Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters from “Passions” Soap Opera

Theresa walked back to her window and looked out at the nice mid summer sky. It was bluer than she’d ever seen it before, being so early in the day. She looked at her watch and mumbled, “8:25.” She couldn’t hide her anticipation. She so wanted to hear Ethan’s voice. She flopped down on her sofa and flipped on a news channel. Her mind couldn’t help but to travel back to the day Ethan told his family that she was the woman he loved.

Harmony MA. 2000

“Theresa, I think it would be better if I went alone to talk to my parents.” Ethan could see the sadness in her eyes. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to let them talk me out of something that I know is so right.”

Theresa stood up and went to sit next to Ethan.

“I’m afraid that your family will not accept me.”

“Theresa my mom adores you, and I can’t explain my father.”

Theresa laughed, yet still a bit nervous.

“And your grandfather? What about him?”

Ethan grabbed his new lover’s hand and kissed it.

“Now you look at me and listen. There is nothing or no one who can keep us apart. I’ve waited my whole life to feel this way. I thought that I had this type of love everlasting with Gwen, but I didn’t. And now that I have found my true love, there is no way I’m going to lose her. I’m in love with you and only you. O.K.?”

Theresa nodded.

Ethan pulled Theresa close to him and kissed her with such passion.

“You were wonderful last night.”

Theresa blushed.

“Don’t be embarrassed Theresa. It’s taking everything out of me not to take you in the other room and making love to you right now.

At that moment Theresa stood and went over to the radio. A familiar love song played that was very special to them.

Theresa walked back over to Ethan as the song continued. She grabbed both his hands and pulled him up.

“Dance with me.” She smiled mocking him from last evening’s events.

Let me close my eyes, let me see
Give me hope tonight give me me
Touch my heart I cry, and I live
I live alone tonight, and I dream
Hold me give me a place
Help me find my way
Carry through the night, carry me
Be the one inside my dream
See me make me whole
Breathe me find my way
I’m here be with me
All for you now… Kiss me
Wake me light the way
Find me… Kiss me

Ethan stood and pulled Theresa very close. They always felt so good in each other’s arms, like they were made to dance with one another.

Wake me light the way
Find me… Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me.

Just as the words “kiss me” came across the speakers, they kissed each other like they have never done before. That was all Ethan needed before picking her up and carrying her into the bedroom. The magic they created was nothing like the night before. Theresa was confident to please her man, and Ethan was eager to please her in every way.

Later on that afternoon, Ethan took Theresa home, and went to see his parents. Gwen had already come to see Ivy and Julian, and they were not happy when they saw Ethan. Not happy one bit.

“Hello mother. Where's father?” Ethan said with authority. “I would like to talk with the both of you right away."

“Good Ethan. We would like to talk with you as well.” Ivy said leading her son to his father’s private library.

As soon as they shut the door, Julian stood up from behind his desk and asked his son if this preposterous news he had heard true.

“Have you fallen in love with the housekeepers daughter?”

“Don’t refer to her as that! Her name is Theresa.”

“Be it as it may, she is still beneath you. She doesn't have your breeding. What were you thinking boy!”

“Look father, I didn’t come here to argue. I came to tell you that I want a future with Theresa. I love her. I’ve never felt this way about anyone else in my life.”

“I can’t believe I’m hearing this.” Ivy said pacing back and forth. Gwen was hysterical when she left here. I care for Theresa and all, but she is still only the housekeeper’s daughter.”

“Would everyone please stop referring to her like she’s some insignificant little girl. Theresa is a wonderful woman with big dreams. Dreams that she is capable of making come true. And I would be a fool to let her slip through my hands.”

“Ethan dear, calm down.”

“I will not calm down mother unless you are ready to listen to what I have to say!”

“O.K. Ethan, We’ll give you a chance to explain yourself. But I’m warning you, you better make it good.” Julian told his son.

“Mother, can you stand here and tell me that you were in love with father when you got married?”

Ivy was stunned by her son’s question.

“And father, can you honestly tell me that mother is your one and only true love?”

Julian opened his mouth to speak, but shut it not knowing what to say.

“No I’m sure is both of your answers, and now you’re living miserable with each other because you don’t want to scandalize the family’s name. Well let me tell you what’s more important than the family’s name. Love! Love is waking up with the person you're with and remembering that you missed them while you slept. Love is making sure you don’t do or say anything that will make them disappointed in you. Love is Theresa and I. I love Gwen and always will, but I’m not in love with her. And seeing how you two have lived all these years, I’m afraid that Gwen and I would have ended up just like that. I care for her, but I can’t marry her while I’m dreaming and wishing I were with another woman. It wouldn’t be fair to Theresa or Gwen.”

Just at that moment Ethan’s grandfather Allister Crane spoke over the speakerphone.

“You know, I would have never thought that an heir of mine would ever be so foolish, but Ethan you take the cake.”

“You can’t talk to my son like that!” Ivy demanded.

“Shut up Ivy. He’s a big boy and very capable of hearing every word I have to say.”

“That’s enough grandfather, your rift is with me, not mother.” Ethan said with anger in his voice.

“Sit down boy and listen!”

Ethan took his seat.

“I would have never thought that you would ever fall for the housekeepers daughter.”

“I can’t listen to this!” Ethan said standing.

“Sit down Ethan!” Allister said very stern.

Ethan sat back down on the sofa and rested his head in his hands not knowing how much of this he could take.

“Now let me finish. My intentions were to make you heir to the Crane Dynasty Empire, and marrying a Hotchiss would’ve place Crane Industries high up on the map where we would be untouchable to our competitors. But I think we can achieve that goal some other way. Never in my years of running this company have I ever had someone to stand up to me and tell me what he wanted. Everyone including your father has shown me how weak they were by not standing up for what they believed in. But you’re different son.”

Ethan slowly lifted his head from his hands.

“What are you saying grandfather?”

“I’m saying that if this young woman is who you want to be with right now, then be with her.”

“Grandfather, I tend to spend the rest of my life loving her.”

“Then love her and love her well. You have my blessings. I knew that you would make an impact on this company. You remind me a lot of myself when I was your age. I stood up to my father also. My only regret is never taking good care of my one and only true love. I loved your grandmother very much, but she was never comfortable loving me, and enjoying all this power. She wanted to live a simple life, a life that I didn’t want or wanted to give her. We wanted different things. That is why I believe she died of a broken heart when your Aunt Sheridan was young. If I knew then what I know now, I may have done things differently. So if you really love Ms. Lopez Fitzgerald, then you have my support 100%.

“Thank you grandfather. This means so much to me, and Theresa.”

Ethan walked out of Julian’s private library and headed for the front door. He couldn’t wait until he saw Theresa.

“She is going to be so happy.” He said to himself. “Now nothing will ever keep us apart. Nothing!”

Just as Ethan was heading out the front door, he ran right into Gwen.

Back at the Penthouse

Theresa stood up and turned off the TV. She walked over to the mantle where a picture of her and Ethan stood. There was a date on the bottom of the photograph.

"The Book Cafe, Harmony MA 7/22/2000."

Theresa remembered all to well what happened that day. She was so sure that she and Ethan was over before they had a chance to get started.

Theresa checked the time again. "9:00", she muttered.

She walked into her bedroom and clutching the picture, she laid down on her bed. Her mind quickly went back four years earlier when she lived in Harmony.

The Crane Mansion Harmony MA '2000'

"Gwen, what are you doing here?" Ethan said with sympathy in his eyes.

"Ethan, I've been driving around all night wondering what went wrong with us."

"Gwen please, don't do this to yourself."

"Don't do this to myself? Ethan, I love you. We planned to spend our lives together. You and I. Not you and that gold digging tramp."

"That's enough Gwen!" Ethan said walking away.

"My goodness Ethan," Gwen said calling after him. "What can she do for you? What possibly can you see in her? She's not like us Ethan."

Ethan turned around and walked back in Gwen's direction. "Now you look here Gwen. Say what you will about me, but don't you ever say another thing about Theresa. What kind of remark is that? 'She's not like us!' She's not human? She doesn't bleed if you cut her? She doesn't say ouch if you pinched her? I can't believe you even made such a bias statement. This is not like you.

"I'm sorry Ethan. I don't know what's come over me. I should have not gone off like that. Please, forgive me."

"You're forgiven Gwen. Now if you excuse me, I must be going."

"Ethan wait, I thought that we could go to the Book Café and talk a little more about what has happened."

"I'm sorry Gwen, I don't have time right now." Ethan said, trying to get to Theresa as fast as he could.

"Ethan, I think it's the least you could do. I'm the one that is at a lost here. I need some type of closure, please!"

Ethan agreed to Gwen’s request much to his dismay, and they both headed down to the Book Café.
