****************************

It had been days since Theresa’s family and friends found out she was alive, but they all continued to rejoice.

Both her and Whitney had a chance to chat just a little bit about love and happiness and Whitney couldn’t believe that Theresa had finally given up on Ethan.

Everyone was convinced that Theresa wanted to stay married to Julian, and live her life as Mrs. Crane, everyone that is except for Ethan.

Ethan couldn’t believe it was over between them, and he refused to accept that it was.

Alistair didn’t waist anytime putting Theresa to work with her new duties. He gave her a list of charities that she had to organize and put together in the Crane name. He had faith that she would get the job done, and do it right. And Theresa didn’t mind either. She loved doing charity work, and vowed that she would do her best to fit in as a Crane.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

One crispy Autumn day, Theresa sat behind her desk in her private study trying to figure out how to run two charity benefits she had scheduled for the same day in December.

“Damn, how did this happen?” She grumbled to herself. “How could I have made such a stupid mistake?” She continued to beat herself up. She had to call the banquet halls with the times of the events, and then send the invitation to the printers for finalization.

She was so wrapped up in her work that she didn’t notice the man standing in the doorway, until he walked up on her.

“Oh, Alistair! What can I do for you?”

Alistair smiled warmly at his daughter in law and sat in the chair in front of the desk. He reached over and took the pen she was writing with out of her hand, and replaced his hand with it.

Theresa’s cheeks instantly went from a light creamy shade to a rosy color.

“Theresa please don’t be nervous when I take your hand like this. It only means I need to talk to you about personal matters.”

“I’m… I’m not sure I understand Alistair.” She began to stutter.

“Relax dear. I need you to do something for me.”

“Oh, anything. Anything, you name it. I want to do my part in the family.”

“Yes, yes, I know you do Theresa. And you’re doing such a great job already. One that I had my doubts about, but you’ve proven to me that you fit well in this family. I admire that. It’s just something that you’re not doing that concerns me.”

Theresa felt Alistair’s grip tighten, and became afraid of what he wanted to say.

“What, what is that Alistair?” She asked cautiously. “What am I not doing?”

“Sleeping with your husband.”

Theresa’s cheek went crimson within seconds, and she snatched her hand out of Alistair’s grip and quickly stood up.

“What!” She shouted at him. “You promised me that I wouldn’t have to. You said you would take care of Julian for me. Now you come in here and tell me to sleep with him.”

Alistair slowly stood from his chair. It was obvious that his old bones were not like they use to be. He walked over behind the desk where Theresa stood angrily.

“Theresa.” He said taking both hands much to her dismay, holding them tight. “Calm down dear. You are getting worked up for nothing.”

“Nothing? Nothing! I don’t think I am. You want me to sleep with the pig that took advantage of me, married me in a drunken stupor, and got me pregnant to boot. No! I won’t do it. There’s no way I will ever sleep with him again.”

Theresa tried pulling out of Alistair’s grip, but it was useless. Even though he had years on him, he was still very strong.

“Look Theresa. I’m not saying you have to have sex with him, but you must immediately move all of your things in his room at once. I don’t want to see any trace of separation between you. What you do behind closed doors is your business, but you must make it appear that you and your husband are together, and happily married. It’s for the sake of the family business.”

“I thought this was personal?”
Theresa still refused to accept this turn of fate. This wasn’t what she wanted. Not one bit.

“It is personal, but it’s business as well. And you will do your part.”

Alistair released the grip and began to walk out of the room when he heard Theresa’s plea.

“Alistair please don’t make me do this. I can’t move into Julian’s room. Please.” She begged.

Alistair turned and faced her. “You will do it, and it will get done today. I’ve already alerted the staff of the changes, and they are already moving swiftly to get the job done. Goodbye Theresa.”

And he turned again and walked out the door closing it but leaving it ajar.

Theresa sat down at her desk and began to weep uncontrollably.

“How could he do this to me? I’ve given up so much already. Things and people that I don’t want to live without, but yet I gave them up. He promised I wouldn’t have to be with that bastard Julian. What have I gotten myself into?”

Ethan, who was on his way to the dining room, passed by Theresa’s study.

He heard faint cries coming from inside the room, and walked in to investigate.

“Theresa, are you okay.”

Theresa looked up trying to erase any evident that she had been crying, and with much right. However, she didn’t want to let Ethan know that she was sad and upset.

He walked closer to her as she pasted a smile on her face.

“Is everything all right?” He began to inquire again.

Theresa stood from her desk and walked around to her ex lover.

“Oh yes Ethan, I’m fine. I stomped my toe a few seconds ago, and it hurt badly. I’m okay. What can I do for you?”

Ethan’s mind quickly went back to the night he was in Theresa’s room kissing her for the last time. He wanted to take her in his arms and tell her that it was something she could do for him.

“You can satisfy this urge to make love to you. You can filled this need that leaves me breathless every time I see your face.” He thought to himself.

“Oh, no, I was heading down to the dining area when I heard you crying.”

“Oh!” Theresa giggled. “Yes, I must have sounded like a baby crying over something so stupid.”

Ethan looked at her and felt it was more than a stomped toe that made her cry, but put the thought out of his head so he wouldn’t pry.

“Well if you’re all right…”

Theresa cut him off. “Yes, I’m fine thank you. So, go do what you were doing. Don’t let me stop you.”

Oh how Ethan wanted Theresa to stop him just so he could spend more time in her presence. He could taste her sweet perfume. He became drunk with her scent.

Ethan walked a little closer to her and rubbed her bare arm, feeling the warmth of the room on her.

“If you say so.” He struggled to get out.

Theresa took Ethan’s hand and replaced it by his side and smiled. “I say so. Please don’t let me stop you.” And she walked back behind her desk.

Ethan could tell that she was worried about the papers that sat in front of her, and offered to help her.

He smiled when she let him know the dilemma that was so fixable.

“Theresa, just schedule one as a breakfast benefit, and the other as dinner.”

Her eyes beamed at the solution, and thanked Ethan for his assistance.

“Anytime Theresa. I would do anything for you.”

Theresa looked at Ethan like she hadn’t in months. She was finally hearing the words she wanted from him so long ago, but it was too late now. She was Julian’s wife, and Alistair wanted her to be faithful to him.

Ethan saw her smile and thought something was changing between them. He took the initiative to walk around the desk to where she stood.

Just inches apart, he began to pull strands of hair from her lovely face. If anyone walked in on them, it would be obvious that Theresa wanted him there.

She looked in his eyes with the love she once possessed for him. Something was drawing her to have him again.

Theresa’s mind slipped back to the night her and Ethan shared their last kiss. She closed her eyes and could feel his warm lips on hers that night. It was such a vivid imagination that she could actually feel them on hers again.

It wasn’t until Ethan’s arms gripped her body tighter that she realized that she was in a real kiss with him.

Theresa could feel his tongue slip through her lips as it dived into hers. She was almost lost inside the kiss until she heard her phone ringing.

Ethan slowly pulled back from her, still holding her, and searched her eyes.

“Don’t get that Theresa.” He whispered.

“I have to. It could be important.”

Theresa pulled herself from him and turned her back to answer the phone.

Ethan wasn’t ready to let go of her. As she talked, and rustled papers on her desk, he began to rub up and down on both her arms feeling her goose bumps. He then pulled her long hair from her neck and began to plant small kisses on her as she talked on the phone.

He then moved his hands slowly to her hips and to the front of her thighs and pulled her closer to him. He could feel himself growing at the touch of her body on him.

Ethan then pushed upward placing his hands on her belly while resting his head on hers waiting for her to end that awful call that was keeping her from him.

As soon as she told the banquet hall the second time for the December dinner banquet, she replaced the receiver and turned in his arms to face him.

“I still love you Theresa. Can’t you feel my love for you?”

Theresa wasn’t sure how to respond to him. She had chosen a new life, a life that didn’t include him.

“Ethan, I thought I explained to you the other night that it’s over between us. I’m with Julian now.”

Ethan became furious at the sound of Julian’s name.

“Are you kidding me? You don’t love Julian. Why are you committed to that fool?”

“That fool is my husband, and I think you should respect him while you are living in this house.”

“Respect? I will never respect that bastard. And I don’t like the fact you being married to him.”

“Well, that’s just something you’re going to have to get use to isn’t it?”

“Theresa there is no way you can convince me that you and Julian are living together as husband and wife.”

Right that second, maid Phyllis entered the study.

“Excuse me ma’am, but I wanted to know if you would like for me to unpack your clothes and place them in your husband’s dresser drawers.”

“Yes Phyllis, that will be fine. And please tell my husband I’ll join him in a second. I need to finish up here first.”

“Yes ma’am.” And she quickly left.

Theresa walked back behind her desk avoiding Ethan’s confused look.

“Theresa! What is this about your clothes in Julian’s room?”

“What do you mean Ethan?” Theresa gave a stern look in Ethan’s direction as if nothing was wrong with this situation.

“What do I mean? What do I mean? You know good and well what I mean. Are you moving in with him?”

“He’s my husband Ethan, and I’m his wife. There’s nothing wrong with me moving my things into his room.”

“The hell it isn’t!” Ethan shouted.

“Ethan, keep your voice down.”

“I can’t believe this. Not six months ago you were fighting to get me back. And now six months later you and Julian are together. This isn’t right Theresa. What the hell is going on around here?”

“I’ve decided that my place is by my husband’s side, and I’ll be the wife he wants me to be.”

“Theresa no!” Ethan began to shout again. “I can’t allow his hands to be on you. He’s a vulture. I won’t allow this madness.”

Theresa neatly stacked her papers on her desk and walked toward the door. She turned around to Ethan and spoke very softly.

“Six months ago it broke my heart that you went back to Gwen. I loved you with all my heart, but you chose her not me. I had to cry myself to sleep at night when I would hear you making love to her in the room next to mine. It hurt like hell Ethan, but it woke me up. I had to give up the fantasy that we’ll ever become the couple I once dreamed about.

“Now I’m with Julian and you can’t stand it. Well I’m sorry Ethan. There’s nothing I can do about how you’re feeling. Just know that what we had, you gave up on it a long time ago, and now it’s time to move on. Give up on the love we once shared Ethan. It’s dead and buried. Let it go.”

“I’ll never let it go Theresa. I love you, and I know deep down you love me too. The kiss we just shared proved it so.”

“That kiss meant nothing to me. You caught me off guard. Let it go Ethan, just let it go.”

Theresa stormed out of the room leaving a heart broken and confused Ethan behind.
