Filmmaker, 20, tries new role: mayoral candidate

HADDON HEIGHTS

When Tommy Avallone launched his mayoral campaign here Tuesday, he dressed like a typical candidate - pin-striped suit, crisp white shirt, red power tie.

But his scuffed sneakers and turned-around baseball cap showed the 20-year-old isn't your typical pol.

Instead, he's an independent filmmaker mounting an independent candidacy for the top job in this borough of about 7,500 people.

The Camden County College student, who's also a part-time videostore clerk, announced his bid at a press conference that was heavy on political theater.

A group of friends stood nearby in black suits and sunglasses, looking like extras from Men in Black. Improbably, they served milk and cookies from a table outside the borough library.

Avallone made the Nov. 4 ballot by collecting signatures from 80 voters. The age limit for the mayor's position is 18.

"Most people won't take me seriously, but then the joke's on them," he said.

Avallone, a former student council president at Haddon Heights High School, believes he can win by drawing young people to the polls. He will campaign in part via a Web site, www.votefortommy.com.

Avallone said he expects to identify campaign issues after going door to door to talk to residents.

He faces a possible generation gap, though.

"He's not experienced enough," said Anna Sharp, a 69-year-old retiree.

"Life experience counts for something," said Liz Tayoun, another retiree who balked at his candidacy. "He doesn't have to be ancient - but 25 anyway."

College student Tim Ronaldson saw it differently.

"I don't see why somebody that age shouldn't run," said Ronaldson, 21. "The only concern I'd have would be that other officials might not treat him the way they should. But that shouldn't disqualify him."

Avallone said he expects to make a documentary about his campaign against incumbent Republican Susan Griffith and Democratic challenger William H. Kenney.

When asked about his rivals, Avallone could name only Griffith - and he had to be told her first name.

"They need to know me," he insisted.
