Camden County College Student Runs For Mayor

Twenty year old Tommy Avallone, a Haddon Heights resident and a Camden County College student, made history on July 4, 2003 when he entered his bid to be the Mayor of Haddon Heights, New Jersey.
Avallones bid for the office makes him the youngest to ever run for mayor of Haddon Heights and the first to ever run as an independent in that town. “I love this town”, says Avallone, “…but there are many qualities that I can bring to the office to make this town even better.
Tommy Avallone stirred up a comotion in this years Mayoral race, getting national recognization from top news channels such as CNN and NBC. His song by “Tommy and the Politicians” could be heard on stations such as 94.1 WYSP and 93.3 WMMR. Avallone was interviewed numerous times by the Philadelphia Inquier and the Courier Post, having stories printed about his interest in being Mayor and his opponents view on his running. “Im glad he is running” says democatic nominee Bill Kenney, “Its good to see todays youth involved in politics. Avallones web site, www.votefortommy.com, ran a semi daily journal about his encounters running for Mayor of Haddon Heights as well as gives the viewers access to his plans for the future. “Tommy has always been able to achieve whatever he puts his mind to” says Avallones mother, she then added “I just hope that the people of this town saw Tommy as for what he really is, a dedicated patrion and a great choice for mayor” .
Avallone, a part time employee at Watch Dog Video in Haddon Heights and an Independent film maker, hopes that his run for mayor will encourage the younger generation to get more involved with politics. “Too often I hear people complaining, saying that something has to change, that there tired of how things are done. I felt the same way but I decided to do something about it” says Avallone.
Avallones run for mayor did not go without scrutiny. Many of the citizens of Haddon Heights felt as if Avallone neglected to touch base on any of the important issues facing the town, such as property taxes which have been on a steady incline for the past 5 years, forcing some familys to move into neighboring towns to escape the high property tax. “Property taxes are a big problem in Haddon Heights” says Avallone, “but there are bigger problems in the town, such as keeping our children safe and out of trouble”. Avallone went further to say “my plan to create a skate park and local venue was geared towards the property tax issue. By bring in more revenue from these two establishments and by incouraging outside business from other towns on Station Ave (Haddon Heights). We could put a hault to the climbing property taxes by using the money generated through the shops”. Many of the senior citizens in Haddon Heights also accuse Avallone of not focusing on there needs. Avalone admitts that he “…hasn’t touched base with the senior citizen population”.
When election day came around, Avallones Independent party headquarters was none other than his place of employment, Watch Dog Video. As the day went by, Avallone sat idiley by waiting for the election results. “I’m nervous” he says, “I think I have a shot at winning this thing. I’ve done everything I could to convince the towns people that I am serious about this election. I just hope that it was enough”. As the polls came to a close Tommy waited for the results. Finally the results came in.Tommy Avallone lost the election to the incumbent, republican Susan R. Griffith. When asked what he will do next, Avallone replied, “Get ready for the next election and hope to pull in more votes”. Tommy also said that he will continue with his academic career in Camden County College and continue to shot the rest of his new movie name “Here’s To Yesterday”.

*side note : Avallone received 207 votes from the town of Haddon Heights, approximatly 8%
