Feedback: Please? I never get any mail Summary: Watcher and Slayer do some bonding ********************************************************************** ** Buffy sighed in frustration. She had been looking through the Watcher diaries for hours and she still hadn't found what she was looking for. She threw the one she was looking at onto the counter, "This is pointless. Where are the details of the Slayers last battles? Why did she lose?" "You didn't lose last night," Giles replied softly, wishing he could ease her pain. "Well, I came pretty damn close," said Buffy, angrily. "I've been training harder and I'm in better shape than I've ever been but still… I just wish I could read some other accounts so I could see where I made my mistake and then I could keep it from happening again." "Yes, well, the problem is after a final battle, it's difficult to get any... well, the Slayer's not... she's rather…" Giles tried to say she was dead but he couldn't bear to think of his own Slayer dying. "It's okay to use the D-word, Giles," Buffy said enjoying the moment to tease him. "Dead," Giles said, glaring at Buffy. "And hence not very forthcoming." "Why didn't the Watchers keep fuller accounts of it? The journals just stop," Buffy complained. "Well, I suppose if they're anything like me, they just find the whole subject too…" Giles began but was interrupted. "Unseemly?" Buffy guessed. "Damn. I love you, Giles, but you Watchers can be such prigs sometimes." Giles was torn between happiness at Buffy telling him she loved him and anger that she thought he would be so unaffected by her death. "I was going to say painful," Giles replied softly. Something in Giles' voice made Buffy look up. When she saw the pain in his eyes she could have kicked herself. "Giles, I'm sorry, that was a stupid thing for me to say. You know me. Foot in mouth Buffy," she smiled up at him trying to take the pain out of his eyes. Deciding that it would take more than that she got up, went around the counter, and hugged him tight. He held on to her like she was his lifeline. They stayed there for a while, both taking comfort in the others presence. Buffy pulled back first and returned to her seat. Giles cleared his throat, "But you're right. Accounts of the final battles would be very helpful. But there's no one left to tell the tales." Buffy looked up, "But there is someone left." She said good-bye to Giles and went off in search of Spike. ****************** Melody was talking her nightly walk when she saw him. Since she had her close call, Melody had taken to wearing a cross around her neck and carrying a squirt gun full of holy water with her, in addition to her other cross and stake. She had found that it was surprisingly easy to get holy water in Sunnydale and no one asked any questions. She was just walking down the street when she a guy with bleached blond hair coming her way carrying a shotgun. She tried to read him, but couldn't and knew that he was a vampire. Even if he hadn't been she didn't like the looks of the gun he was carrying anyway. She quickly disappeared from sight. She realized though that he was heading towards Dawn's house so she decided to follow him. Seeing him sit down on the back steps next to Buffy gave Melody such a shock that she reappeared in the bushes. Luckily, neither one seemed to notice her. "What do you want now?" Buffy asked, tears running down her cheeks. "What's wrong?" Spike asked. "I don't want to talk about it," Buffy replied. At least not with you, Melody heard. "Is there anything I can do?" Spike asked, not understanding why he was sitting here trying to comfort the Slayer. "Just go away, Spike," Buffy replied tiredly. I wish Giles were her, she thought. Spike took one last look at her and left. Melody wasn't sure what to do. She didn't understand why Buffy would be talking to a vampire, but that didn't matter now. Melody could see she was very upset about something. She turned herself invisible and floated off towards Giles' apartment. She was glad she had checked out everyone online and gotten all of his or her information. She reached the apartment, but wasn't sure what to do. She couldn't just knock on the door and say Buffy needed him, she had no way to explain how she knew that. She slipped under the doorframe and found him sitting at his desk, looking through some books. She floated over to his ear and whispered, "Buffy needs you." Giles jumped. He could have sworn he just heard someone say that Buffy needed him. He shook his head and continued with his reading. "Buffy needs you," the voice repeated. Giles looked around and said, "Who's there?" "Buffy needs you," the voice repeated again, beginning to sound exasperated. Giles decided that if Buffy needed him he should just get to her. "Where is she?" he asked the room, feeling silly for talking to thin air. "Her house," Melody whispered, glad that he seemed to be going. Giles grabbed his jacket and was out the door. Melody, deciding that her work here was done, went back to the motel. Giles pulled up in front of the Summers' house and found it dark. He wasn't surprised, considering the hour. He thought he saw a glow out back and decided to check out the back of the house before ringing the doorbell and waking everyone up. He found Buffy on the back porch in tears. He went to her immediately, "Buffy, what's the matter?" Buffy looked up in surprise when she heard his voice. She wanted to ask him why he was here but just threw herself into his arms. He held her as she cried, rubbing her back soothingly. When she had pulled herself together, he asked again, "What's wrong?" "Mom, has to go to the hospital for some tests," she told him. "Oh, Buffy, I'm so sorry," he said, looking at her in sympathy. This poor girl, who had already had to go through so much, did it never stop? They didn't talk much, but Buffy seemed to just take strength from his presence so he just sat there with his arm around her. Eventually they said good night and Giles was rewarded with another kiss on the cheek. As Giles made his way home, he sent up a silent prayer for Buffy and her mother and a thank you to whomever had sent him to her tonight.
