~Chapter Ten~
Saran Wrap
The next day, Joanne had PE first lesson. And thankfully it wasn’t anything too physical, as she was still feeling a bit wobbly from her cold.
They were playing table tennis and Joanne was beating Daniel by five games. Daniel had been very quiet today and Joanne had been thinking about whether being his girlfriend was a good idea any more. He had seemed very unhappy, since after the Halloween Ball. She also was starting to loose the attraction to him. But inside she just hoped she was just feeling put off from her coughing and headaches she had from her recent cold.
After beating Daniel for the fifth time Miss Smith made an announcement to everyone in the gym.
“Next lesson we’ll be taking a trip to Canton Indoor Swimming Pool, so make sure you have your swimming suits.”
Finally PE ended and Joanne headed for the girls’ changing room. But was stopped as Daniel came up to her, looking very awkward. Daniel pulled Joanne over to the side and said, “After you get changed I need to tell you something.”
This was the first time he’d spoken to her since they said hi at breakfast.
“Okay.” and she went to change; not trying as hard as she usually did to look good. She knew Daniel was a wonderful person, but deep down inside she knew her feelings weren't the same anymore.
Joanne met Daniel in the corner of the common room.
“Jo, I'm just going to tell you this straight out, because I can't keep this secret from you anymore. I will understand if you want to break up with me because of it.”
“Tell me Daniel, what's bothering you?” Joanne asked, fearing the worst.
“I’m not sure if I want to tell you now, it might scare you.”
“JUST TELL ME!”
“Well, Jo, I-I-…” He hesitated as if trying to think of something, “I’m…afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of...” He looked away as if he didn’t want to say anything. Joanne continued to stare.
“I’m a afraid of spiders!” Daniel blurted out suddenly.
Joanne wasn’t really sure if that was what he wanted to say because he didn’t look the slightest bit ashamed of it.
“Wow. I don't know what to say.” Joanne said casually. “I- you sure that’s all you wanted to say.”
Daniel sadly looked at his feet, and he suddenly seemed tired.
“Maybe.” He turned before she could say anything and went to the boys’ dorm. She stared after him.
Nicky, Ben, and Nathan were watching Joanne from another corner, curiously. She turned and started walking up the stairs all the while thinking. They could practically see the wheels turning. Joanne was thinking; I was going to break up with him, but I can't now. He's been really depressed lately. What should I do? She was upstairs now, and she sat on her bed, still thinking. Joanne made her decision, and got ready for bed, then fell into a restless horror filled sleep.
She woke up hours later with a start; she had a nightmare about some mad scientist injecting a needle in her arm.
It was four o'clock from looking at the clock on the wall, so she decided to go ahead and go downstairs to wait for Daniel after she dressed.
Joanne sat next to the common room fire reading “Charlotte’s Web” until dawn. She was on the final chapter when Daniel came down, looking surprised to see her there.
“Joanne, I’ve been thinking all night about some things.” Daniel said, sitting in an armchair near the other side of the fireplace.
“Ok.” Joanne replied closing her book.
“Well, I don’t think we should go out anymore, I’m afraid that I might end up hurting you if we’re together and I don’t want that to happen.”
Joanne blinked; he had said this quite fast. And it took a minute to sink in the fact that he was doing the exact thing she planned to do.
“But we’re still going to be friends, right?” Continued Daniel, looking at her anxiously.
“Of course.” Said Joanne, smiling, “but what do you mean by hurting.”
Daniel looked slightly tentative, “You know…” he said uncertainly, “couples fight and I’d never want to fight with you.”
Joanne smiled, “That’s sweet.” She paused for a second. “I don’t think we made that good a couple anyway.”
She laughed and Daniel joined in.
“Yeah. Recently though, I’ve been thinking you more of a good friend.” Daniel told her honestly.
“Me too.” Replied Joanne, lifting her head, “I guess I’ve been too afraid to admit though.”
They both grew silent for a moment and then started talking about Nicky’s stupid frolic game and looked as if they had never recalled the last few weeks and were just like they were before Halloween. Good friends.
Joanne was soon asking Daniel why the Frolic game (or prank game) was ever started.
“Didn’t Nicky tell you?” Daniel said with raised eyebrows, Joanne shook her head. “Ever since he first met Max Wheeler and Argon Simpleton the game started. You know Nicky and Max pulled tricks on each other, well soon enough they made a game out of it and then Ben and me joined in. But nowadays we just have competition to see who can play the best prank on someone. Nicky is winning at the moment.”
Joanne sat back in her seat, “Well he didn’t explain the full reason of it before. So now it makes sense in a way but I personally think it’s totally ridiculous.”
Daniel grinned and said, “Yeah, it is a bit silly. But we enjoy it mostly when we show our antics, to Max and Argon especially.”
Joanne giggled remembering the last prank they pulled on Max and Argon with the gift box containing a boxing glove and a spring.
After a while the rest of North house descended the stairs to the common room.
It was a Saturday, so they didn't have classes. After breakfast Joanne went back to the common room. She was smiling to herself, as she had just witnessed Nicky getting dumped by Sheila in the foyer. Apparently Nicky’s joking around had gone a bit too far recently, in Sheila’s case it did when she found a mouse in her empty milk jug this morning.
Nicky had disappeared for the rest of the morning someplace. Probably to sulk, thought Joanne.
Daniel, Ben and Joanne, feeling slightly bored were playing snap in one of the corners of the common room, as it was full of bored students that day.
Nicky came bounding through the common room door a moment later as Joanne suddenly slammed her hand down on the table,
“Snap! Ha! I won again!”
Nicky strode up to them looking rather smug.
“Guess what?” He said, “I'm going out with Saran Wrap! From South."
Joanne started laughing at her name, because it sounded familiar.
“You're going out with plastic wrap!” Joanne, Daniel and Ben shouted.
Simultaneously, they looked at each other, and then started laughing at each other.
“No. I'm going out with Saran Wrap. She has a brother named Reynolds. Nobody named Plastic though, to my knowledge.” Nicky said seriously.
Nicky frowned at their expression and went to get a chess set to play with Ben, and once he left, Joanne immediately started plotting.
“Hey, guys, do you wanna pull a really great prank on Nicky?”
“YEAH!” they said jubilantly.
“Okay, I'm going to write to my parents, and they should send me some stuff, and once I get it we will plan our prank out all the way.” Joanne said, and then raced to her dorm to write the letter straight away.
As she wrote it she evilly thought that Nicky should be given a taste of his own medicine.
Surprisingly, her package came back that night. It was 300 rolls of Saran Wrap and 10 cases of krazy glue, just in case.
It wasn't very late, so Joanne ran downstairs to get Daniel and Ben. She pulled them over to the side and said, “Okay, here's the plan. My parents sent me boxes of Saran Wrap at my request-”
“How could they send you South girls in a box?” Daniel questioned tiredly.
“NO, the Saran Wrap we're talking about is a plastic film used to cover dishes and stuff. Okay, what we're going to do is sneak down to the kitchens and get honey and lard. We spread this stuff on the Saran Wrap and wrap Nicky in it while his sleeping and anybody else you want to while we're at it. We should also put this stuff around all of his stuff, like his clothes and books, only without the honey and stuff. Got it?”
“Yeah, this is a great idea, Jo.” Ben grinned, and Daniel was barely containing laughs.
“My parents also sent me Krazy Glue for some reason. We could use that if you have any ideas.”
“Duh, glue them to their beds.” Daniel said.
“Okay. You guys go get the honey and lard. I'm guessing you know how to sneak down to the kitchens?”
“Oh, yes.”
“Okay, great. I'll look up to the dorms to make sure everyone is asleep, I might have to sneak some sleeping tablets in some of their bedtime drinks just in case.” She smiled remembering Lucia’s incident with some laxative tablets. “And then we’ll be ready to roll." Joanne said with a devilish glint in her eyes. Amelia was tops on her hit list.
When everyone was asleep Joanne met Ben and Daniel in the common room, dragging a sack of Saran Wrap rolls in front of her.
“Are you guys ready?” Asked Joanne eagerly.
“Yeah!”
“Let's get Nicky first. We might as well get Nathan and Anthony while we're up there.”
“Okay, should each of us have a person, or everybody work together?” Daniel asked
“Good thinking, each of us should have our own person. I'll take Nicky.” Joanne said.
“I got Nathan.” Ben said.
“So I'll take Anthony.” Daniel concluded.
They quietly walked up the stairs and let themselves into the boys’ dormitory. From the looks of things the sleeping tablets Joanne had sneaked in earlier had worked and all three boys were in a deep sleep.
Joanne opened her first box of Saran Wrap and spread honey on the entire length. She then crept over to where Nicky lay and carefully wrapped him mummy-style in the Saran Wrap. Daniel and Ben were doing similar things.
Joanne was trying really hard not to burst into laughter at the sight of Nicky drooling. Then she rolled Nicky over to one side and spread a bottle of Krazy Glue on Nicky's bed and put him on it. Then she spread lard on more rolls and completely encased his four-poster bed.
Ben had done something similar to Nathan, only with honey, and Daniel was Krazy gluing Anthony's bed curtains closed. When they were done, they did the same thing to Shane Maddox and Matthew Moratsin in the sixth year dorm.
Next they went into Joanne’s dorm. Joanne wrapped Amelia in honey and her bed in lard. She couldn't resist Krazy-gluing Amelia's slippers to the floor.
Ben also got a crafty gleam in his eyes and wrapped Gen in lard, but spared the bed trappings. The funniest part about all of this was that none of their victims had any idea what was going on and they couldn’t wait to see their reactions the next morning.
The next morning came, and a comical sight was acted out in the first year dorms. The expressions of the honeyed and larded victims were priceless. When Joanne got downstairs she high-fived Ben and Daniel and said, “Some things are priceless, but for everything else, there's MasterCard. Well, that truly was priceless, but I'm sure we could've bought the Saran Wrap and glue with MasterCard.”
“So I guess I just met the real Saran Wrap huh?” Nicky said, wiping some remaining honey off his face.
“Yep!” All three chorused.
Coincidentally, Nicky never talked to Miss Saran Wrap again, the image of honey and lard came into his head every time he saw her. So Saran ended up dumping him for being inconceivable.
There was also a fact that Nicky never went near honey again after having to spend the day in the shower just so he could get rid of the gunk that had clung to his skin.
