I bin doin' random acts lately. Found a new flavor of linux which I like a lot called Ubuntu, I've just finished readin' a biography of George Washington which I didn't like but suffered through. The next book in line is likely gonna be a biography of Silent Cal. Somebody thinks I oughta read another one on Lincoln just because the first one agreed with my opinion that he was the worst President of all time (narrowly edging out FDR for the title). I ordered up a mail order gunsmithing course so's I can learn to build myself a race gun and such like. I'm sufferin' the idiocy of my current bosses on the job, which is another reason to look into gunsmithy. I've been on a nutrisystem diet for 3 months and I'm skinnier than I've been since before the turn of the century. One of these weeks I'm gonna have to get on the roof and shut down my coolers, though it was warm enough today to need them a little. I keep pokin' around at designing a website and writing perl programs and learning some database stuff. I'm pretty scattershot alla time so I start and then drift to somepin else and then lose focus on that to start a fourth thing

I was gonna start this little monologue and then develop a rant but I just kept listing things...

I have one of those page-a-day calendars at the office with zen quotes which helps me stay centered when I occasionally want to go postal on folks there.

I occasionally think I am anachronistic, living in the wrong time, between revolutions. Maybe technology will keep me preserved enough to participate in the next one so I can help refine the American experiment... or not.

Is it still freedom when the government stops you from publishing your opinions, dis-arms you, takes half of your earnings, defines who you have to associate with and what you can do in the company of others? Is it still freedom when the government can take your property to give to someone else who will produce more tax revenue, can dictate what you are allowed to eat and drink, can grant the privilege of allowing a barber to cut hair and a manicurist to paint nails?

I don't think so.

What is a race gun, and what are perl programs?

I want to learn how to design a web site too but I have so much to learn before I can do that it's frustrating. I am starting (again) to learn to type correctly using a typing book from a class I took when I lived in Virginia Beach - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh................I need patience!!!!

I also wonder and rail about the stupidity of and limits imposed by our government at times. Rachel is out of school at the moment(I have guilt over the reasons for that), is working part time and planning on getting her GED beginning next semester so that she can go ahead and start college. Although I wish she had had a traditional high school experience amd could enter college like most 18 year olds, I don't really care that she's not getting every class required in high school. Public high school is not a great learning experience for all students, and Rachel is an intelligent person who can learn what and as much as she needs from here on out (that is one of the very good things about our country). One of my gripes at the moment is that she is having her drivers license revoked because she is not a full time student this semester. She is enrolling for the GED tomorrow but that's probably not going to help. And two days after that notice arrived Rachel was ticketed for curfew violation and her friend who is 18 was ticketed for abetting a minor AND the cop told Rachel he could have come to our house and ticketed me as well (but he didn't). Even though it was after 1 a.m. I knew where Rachel was, I almost always know where she is and with who because she tells me. As long as she is honest with me and is responsible, I let her make as many of her own decisions as possible. So it's very frustrating to have the government come in and "help" me with my parenting. We go to court later this month and I intend to have my say although that's as far as I'll go in this instance probably. One thing you might consider though Mike is to join a group, start a group, or run for office to effect some of the changes you want to see. Maybe that would make you less frustrated with the govenment we have. I'm considering what I can do to be more active in some areas. hope I don't die before I actually get something accomplished though (I tend to think about stuff a long time first). I do think we still have a great country and amazing freedom for the most part. I also believe there are many, many injustices that need to be righted, and many people here who need many kinds of help. That's what I hope to make some small effort towards as soon as I can quit spending all my time just surviving. I am hoping to start school in January and have a BS in 3 years total. Then we'll see what I can find to do that will benefit someone besides myself.

I have been reading off and on 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff and It's All Small Stuff'. It's been around a long time but it's a really good way to learn some big life lessons in small steps.

I also read lots of political cartoons, Zit's, Calvin & Hobbes, Doonesbury, and Far Side. Sarcastic intelligent funny stuff is the best. Watched a good movie last night too. 'One True Thing' with William Hurt, Meryl Streep, and Renee Zelwegger, not new but good. Life lessons, family relationships, and as Beth so liked in CRASH, it shows that all people have positive and negative sides.

A race gun is one like this:

This is an STI 1911 in .40S&W with a milled fitted slide, reddot sight, custom trigger assembly, wide magazine well, high capacity magazine and compensator. This type of gun is for speed shooting competitions where the competitor runs through a range firing at multiple targets past (usually between 10 and 20), past obstructions, around barracades, etc. for speed and accuracy.

Perl is an open source and very popular and powerful programming language that is also fairly easy to begin using.

In regard to your going back to school I have two suggestions (entirely unsolicited, I know but I retain my inalienable right to kibbitz): First, set up your computer with Ubuntu as a second OS, and start playing with Apache 2, PHP (another scripting language), MySQL, and other cool software available free on this linux distro. That'll hone those typing skills and can be fun if approched with the right attitude). Second, point your formal education goals towards teaching. A teaching cert can potentially get your education subsidized by local, state or federal government, it would leverage the skills and experience you already have and despite the negative press, it pays pretty well for a reasonable amount of work. Starting teachers (with a Bachelors degree) in my district get 36K the first year. That is an annual contract that requires 189 days of work, of approximately 6.5 hours a day. I've given some thought myself to teaching as I've developed quite an interest in history and politics. Teaching those subjects would allow me to get paid for following my interests.

My take on curfews, public school attendance, drivers licenses and a host of other government intrusions is that they're unconstitutional. I'm also convinced trying to argue that in a court would be futile. It may be that you kicked off the rant I intended to have in my first post...

According to the Declaration of Independence humans are endowed by their creator with inalienable rights, including but not limited to, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Whether these rights are given by God can be debated, but the fact that the exist and originate with the individual isn't in dispute (in my experience at least). Those inalienable rights originate with the individual and then are delegated to government as a means of helping to insure that they are protected. What this means is that I delegate authority to the government. It is impossible for me to delegate authority I don't have, therefore the government cannot on my behalf, legitimately infringe on somebody else's rights, take their property or limit their freedoms. Because no individual has the right to do that, neither does the government. The only legitimate function of any government at any level is to protect the rights and freedoms of the individual. Every other function, responsibility, job, project or activity should be left to the private sector, to individuals, to private organizations or charities.

...as rants go that was pretty succinct...

Race guns are used in USPSA and IPSC matches.

The toys and the games are extremely cool.

Wow!

I can't believe Mike and Katy are talking politics/government, and there isn't any bloodshed.

I went to look at the stupid emoticons, and came back to find my post erased... what up with that? I may never post again.

Philip, just own up to the fact that it was operator error that erased your post. Just kidding . . . but if you type it in notepad or word or something first and then post it, then you don't lose stuff. I learned this the hard way. Please post again. Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase.

Ok, just once more.

I almost always use word because it has all that formating and spellcheck stuff, but it was just one stinking line.

Now... never again!!! (just kidding... maybe)

I've occasionally lost posts here because I forget that you have to post it and then confirm it. All the other sites I post to assume you know what you're doing when you hit the "post" button one time. I've also been able to recover from that by backing through the browser history in some cases.

As for spell check, I do that the old fashioned way, by going to www.m-w.com and looking up the word in question.

For typing actual documents I use openoffice, its powerful, it has all the useful features and its free.

Probably Katie and I can talk politics without drawing blood so long as we remain on a philosophical level. For example if I say "stupid government" many folks will agree even if we disagree about what is stupid about the government, but if I say "stupid John Kerry" people who like John Kerry (I can't figure out why anyone would, but they do) are likely to be irritated.

I can change the settings so you only have to submit once without confirming, but I like to be able to go back and change things, and I'm the FORUM MASTER, so I get to have the settings I want. Oh. The power.

See like on this one I decided to add a line so I could say happy birthday to Gretchen.

Happy Birthday Gretchen!
