HEY FAMILY
so I was talking to mom about christmas stuff and having ideas so I thought I'd share them. I emailed this out to everyone, so you may have already read it; if so, just skip to the bottom and comment!! Feedback is how things get done.
we were discussing how my mom is thinking of getting laser guns or at least gift certificates to play laser tag for everyone for xmas... and how rachel wants to get the new edition of trivial pursuit..
and I was THINKing... what if we all, instead of buying individual gifts for each family member, created or purchased one big thing that we can all share, all do and enjoy together, such as the aforementioned ideas, or. . .
- picking a date everyone can agree on this coming summer and making a gift of the cost of renting a log cabin at Osage Hills outside Bartlesville for a weekend of camping for the family
- a new board game or interactive something that we can all enjoy and play during family get togethers
- chipping in on a plane ticket for mike and edie and kids to come visit
- paying for movie tickets for everyone so we can all go see a movie together
i dont know what else is possible.. i mean the possibilites should be endless......... if you take all the time and energy you would be pouring into gifts for twenty-odd family members just in our little circle and put that all towards a vacation, or a family day, or a game, or a book, or an investment, or something..! Maybe we could get something really nice and expensive that the whole family, over the course of the year, can share. I am posting a seperate thread about my car.. this could fall into that category.
Or I was thinking, if not that, then of course we all enjoy getting random crap in stockings, candy, books, personalized gifts that someone thoughtful has taken the time to pick out.. . but it would be good if we could catalog on the family msg board what each person's wants and wishes are... i mean I want a djembe (african drum) but I WISH that I had transportation money to go to Austin occasionally to join the drum circles there... or uh.. I want vegan icecream, but I WISH that I had more access to vegan foods all the time... so someone could get creative (if we were doing personalized gifts) and instead of giving me a djembe, which I am more likely to eventually obtain by myself anyway, or can borrow from friends- you could give me a gas card with enough gas to get back and forth between austin and waco a few times. And instead of getting a gallon of icecream that you had to ship from overpricedhealthfood.com overnight, or bring in from tulsa, you could order a cheap icecream maker off ebay so that I could make my own whenever I wanted. (these are just examples, i'm not trying to plug my personal wish list..)
I can think of a few other things that would be more useful to our family members than a new sweater or something.. instead of each person spending $5 or $10 on someone, we could all combine an average of $7 towards a gift for them and give him over a hundred dollars in a savings account towards starting school, or towards getting a small business off the ground, or towards a brand new garden, or car repairs...
anyway.. I'm going to post this on the family forum, so go there to reply to this stuff. I realize we're all short on cash, I am too- but we have some time to put some real thought into making the most of limited resources, and make the holiday last longer than one day of food and gifts bought at the mall.
