I'm a very non-intellectual reader, compared to most of you, I'm sure. I don't own J.D. Salinger's other stories, no Hemingway, Tolstoy, no Ford Maddox Ford. Maybe eventually I will get to these books, but I read what interests me, not what will impress others. But here are a few of my favorite books, most of which you can get in a library - even in Pickering.

.Nature - R.W. Emerson
.The Divinity School Adress - R.W. Emerson
.Fast Train Russia - Jay Higgenbottom (a really great travel story that is slightly moving and will inspire you to go to Russia)
.To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
.Walden - Henry Thoreau
.China - Jan Wong
.The Englishman's Boy - Guy Vanderhague
.The Gringo Trail - Mark Mann
.Don't Lean Out the Window - Stewart Basset
.Fortune Hotel - ed. Sarah Champion

Sure, these are not everyone's tastes, but they are all amazing writers, if not great story tellers. Nothing too heavy or pretentious.
