I agree with him a little. I tend to do a lot of research before I write something, just so it'll be accurate. I don't think you need to have actually experienced something to know what it'd be like, as long as you're able to adequately empathise with the situation (does that make sense?) There are some genres that demand that you write outside your experience; for example, I don't think Erin herself ever turned into a cat (unless she's not telling us something ... heh). I mean, the genuine experience is great to have, but there are times when you just can't have it. Has anyone ever read Memoirs of a Geisha? (probably.) I believed it all the way through -- but it was written by a regular white guy. ah, the power of research.

Besides, if I stuck to "write what you know", I'd have a very limited pool of story ideas to draw from. ;)
