yes, I heard a radio programme about the Salvation Army providing flats for homeless people and they interviewed some of the formerly-homeless and all spoke in glowing terms about the kindness they had received. One, I remember, was asked if he had been evangelised, and he seemed genuinely surprised to learn that the people who had helped him had been the Salvation Army. One SA captain was asked about this and she said that they leave it to God to save souls. Their job is to care about people, not to convert them. She was asked if people they help join the church and she said that was not the point. They may go on to join, but it isn't suggested to them.

I didn't get the impression that the SA get ANYTHING out of helping people. Their love is really about as unconditional as any love for a stranger can be.

The JA only "love" people who conform. Leave the JA, after any number of years, and you quickly and very dramatically learn just how conditional that love is.
