To be fair, John, I think Noel was in the Navy either late in the war or after it and I don't think he volunteered, but was called up, so that whenever he left will have been when his discharge came through, which implies no cowardice at all....even if there was any action left to have by the time he served. He was 19 when WW2 ended.

I have never read more than a few lines ever about his service, the emphasis there always having been on his conversion, docked in Sydney.....so I suspect that it was no more important to him than any other man's in an era of conscription and National Service.

If he was called up later, the next bit of action would have been Korea, when he would have been about 25. I don't remember Noel ever telling us what he did in the Navy, but 4 years after the Korean War he was a serving lay pastor, which would have given him time to go to Bible College.
