Security In Christ
(Colossians 2:10)

The Reality - The reality of our security in Christ is seen in the fact that our salvation is a present possession (Eph. 1:3-8, 2:1-9, 4:32). Our salvation is something for which we can have complete assurance (I Thess. 1:5, Col. 2:2). Ours is a wonderful security in Christ.
The Misunderstanding - If the Bible plainly teaches that God gives eternal life, why is it that so many oppose it?
A. The failure to understand Bible doctrine concerning salvation. There are so many who do not understand salvation. Salvation is given as a free gift of God's grace and does not depend at all upon human merit (Rom. 3:19-28, 4:1-5, Eph. 2:8-9, Tit. 3:5). Those who suppose that they have some merit hate and oppose such a doctrine (Acts 24:14).

B. The failure to make right division (II Tim. 2:15).

1. As to salvation tenses - There is a sense in which every believer has a three-fold salvation. It is important to note these different tenses.

a. Past Salvation - The believer has been saved from the guilt and the penalty of sin (I Cor. 1:18, Eph. 2:5, 8, II Tim. 1:9).

b. Present Salvation - The believer is saved from the daily power (ie., dominion, habit or practice) of sin. It is one thing to be saved spiritually and quite another to have your life (ie., daily walk) saved from shipwreck (I Tim. 2:15, 4:16, II Cor. 7:10).

c. Future Salvation - The believer will be saved from the presence of sin (Rom. 13:11). This will take place at Christ's return for the Body of Christ. This is the believer's Blessed Hope (Tit. 2:13, 1 Thess. 4:13-18).

2. As to dispensational distinctions throughout the Bible God has had different dispensations (or administrations). There are truths which belong to Israel that do not belong to the Body of Christ. Peter uses the phrase "present truth" in II Pet. 1:12.
Many try to follow the dispensations of the Old Testament (Rom. 15:4) or of Christ's earthly ministry (Rom. 15:8). But Paul was given the dispensation for us (Col. 1:25-26, Eph. 3:2-3, Rom. 15:15-16, 16:25-26).

3. As to salvation and rewards Salvation is a free gift (Rom. 6:23, 5:14-21). Rewards are for a believer's works. A believer may not have any reward at the Judgement seat of Christ, but "...he himself shall be saved..." (I Cor. 3:15).

4. As to passages warning unbelievers An example of such a message is Rom. 11:21. This is not dealing with the members of the Body of Christ, but rather it is a warning to the Gentiles (in light of their great spiritual privilege and Israel's fall).

III. The Doctrine

The believer has eternal life - Rom. 6:23, Tit. 1:2.

The believer is saved by grace, not works - Eph.2:8-9, Tit. 3:5, Rom. 4:5, 11:6.

The believer is in God the Father - I Thess. 1:1, II Thess. 1:1.

The believer is in Jesus Christ - Phil. 1:1; II Cor. 5:17.

The believer is indwelt by God the Father - Eph. 4:6.

The believer is indwelt by Jesus Christ - Col. 1:27, Gal. 2:20.

The believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit - Rom. 8:9, I Cor. 2:12, 3:16.

The believer has his sins forgiven. Sin is what separates us from God, and God has already forgiven us all trespasses. Col. 2:13.

The believer will not have his sins imputed (written down, placed on his account) - Rom. 4:8.

The believer has peace with God - Rom. 5:1.

The believer has no condemnation - Rom. 8:1, 32-34.

The believer is complete in Christ - Col 2:10.

The believer has been blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places - Eph. 1:3.

The believer has a God that cannot lie - Tit. 1:2.

The believer's life is Christ's life - Col. 3:4.

The believer has been baptized into the Body of Christ - I Cor. 12:13.

The believer is sealed (Eph. 1:13) until the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30). This is the earnest (guarantee) of the Spirit - Eph. 1:14, II Cor. 1:22, 5:5.

The believer is accepted in the beloved - Eph. 1:6.

The believer has been bought by Christ - I Cor. 6:19-20.

The believer has God on his side - Rom. 8:31.

The believer cannot be separated from the love of God - Rom. 8:38-39.

The believer is the workmanship of God (Eph. 2:10), which He will complete - Phil. 1:6.

The believer is seated in heaven - Eph. 2:6.

The believer has an inheritance - Eph. 1:18, Col. 1:12.

The believer is a new creature - II Cor. 5:17.

The believer is saved from the wrath to come - I Thess. 1:10, 5:9, Rom. 5:9. The list goes on.
The believer may truly rest in the finished work of Christ. He rejoices, not because of his own faithfulness, but in the faithfulness of God (II Tim. 2:13).

This security in Christ does not lead the believer to loose and careless living. Quite the contrary, it is rather the motivation to live under grace, as is well pleasing to the Lord (Rom. 6:1-12, 12:1-2, II Tim. 2:19-22). This is what Paul calls "walking worthy of our vocation" (Eph. 4:1).
