The line was changed in later editions (including the 1950 London edition published in P Yogananda's lifetime) to read:

"The casual gaze may see nothing extraordinary in an avatar's form, but, on occasion, it casts no shadow nor makes any footprint in the ground."

Since the passage is stating that hard and fast rules cannot be applied inthe case of an avatar it is clear that it never meant "always casts no shadow."

As for the two versions of a story, the Paramahansa was a close disciple of Sri Yukteswar and heard the story directly from his lips. Satyeswaranada on the other hand never knew Sri Yukteswar. Everyone must decide for themselves who is more likely to have heard the correct version.
