Many disciples of Yogananda seem to have found it necessary to establish their legitimacy as spiritual teachers by making unsubstantiated claims about what Yogananda told them they could do.

These assertions are inevitably made in the context of advertising, that is, to attract and keep paying students.

Traditional Yoga masters did not charge. They regarded vanity as contrary to the doctrine of the Gita which requires renunciation of all consequences of action.

They do not feel secure enough in their own spirituality to base their legitimacy on their own character and life.

Sprituality shines through when it is there. Appeal to authority for legitimacy does not add to your sprituality or make you a guru.
