Subject: St Bernadette and the Visions at Lourdes

On this day (February 11th) in 1858 a 14 year old girl named Mary Bernard Soubirou was collecting firewood near a cave by the Gave river in France, when she saw the figure of a dazzling woman in white who she later identified as the Virgin Mary. Subsequent visions at the site attracted large crowds who watched the girl converse with the apparition in a trance like state. No-one else saw the apparition. On February 25th the Virgin Mary told Bernadette to cut a small hole through the ground, from which gushed forth the stream of Lourdes, credited with healing powers. On march 25th Bernadette announced that the vision had asked for a church to be constructed at the site. Despite much opposition the church was eventually built.

In 1866 Bernadette joined the Sisters of Notre Dame in Nevers. She is said to have suffered some harsh treatment there until it was discovered that she suffered from an incurable illness.

Bernadette died on April 16th 1879, still giving the same account of her visions. Her body, buried in a damp grave was dug up 30 years later and found to be in a state of incorruption. It has since been on display in a glass casket at the convent of Nevers.

The Grotto at Lourdes has remained one of the Christian worlds major pilgrimage spots and the stream continues to flow producing around 4,000 gallons of water each day. There are many reported miracles attributed to the healing powers of the waters there.

The photograph below is the only known photograph of Bernadette at the Grotto of Lourdes. It was taken in 1862, three years after the visions.
