Subject: St Catharine of Alexandria

November 25th - Feast day of St Catharine of Alexandria - Bride of Christ (who gives her name to the Catharine's Wheel).

St Catharine of Alexandria - Raphael

Tradition has it that St Catharine was put to death on this day in 307A.D by the Emperor Maxentius after she had defeated in public debate the best pagan scholars of the age. The execution was by means of being tortured on a spiked wheel, then beheading. When her head was cut off milk flowed instead of blood, whilst holy oil seeped from her bones.

Catharine was the daughter of King Costus and Queen Sabinella, and excelled herself in her studies and by her beauty. When the time came for her to be married her mother was anxious for her to find a good husband, but Catherine refused all suitors saying "Bring me a bridegroom who is as learned, as beautiful, as noble, as rich,—in short, is of equal rank with me, and I am ready to accept him for my husband."

One night when Catharine was sleeping with her mother the Virgin Mary appeared to them and showed Catharine an array of saints and princes offering her anyone as her husband. Catharine refused them all, then Jesus Christ appeared before them. Catharine declared that her heart belonged only to him, but when the Virgin Mary asked her son if he would accept her as his bride he refused saying she was not yet a Christian. However he promised to marry her if she was baptised.

The next day her mother took her to an old hermit called Ananias for baptism, wherupon Catharine was indeed married to Jesus Christ.

Catharine converted many to the worship of her divine husband, but this was not always so fortunate for the converted. At one time she was thrown into prison by the emperor who then sent fifty scholars to argue with her on the subject of idolatry. However Catharine was so persuasive that all of them converted to Christianity, whereupon the emperor had them all burned.
