Subject: St Lucy's Day

December 13th - St Lucy's Day, according to some traditions the first day of Christmas.

St Lucy is the patron saint of eyes, and of light. She is probably derived from the Sabine Goddess Juno Lucina or Lucetia, the Mother of Light.

By tradition Lucy was a fourth century Sicilian girl who once looked upon a man with lust. Filled with remorse she immediately plucked her eyes out. God however, being merciful gave her a new pair of eyes, and so St Lucy is sometimes depicted as holding her eyes on a plate or a stem.

St Lucy is the patron saint of Sweden, and by tradition on this day the eldest daughter of a Swedish family adornes herself with a headdress of candles and serves her family sweet buns marking the start of Christmas.
