Subject: True Meaning of Arati

“ARATI” is performed in front of god or goddess at dawn or at dusk. Both are the connecting point of day and night. The word “arati” consists of – “A” means “The end” and “Rati” means “desires”. So actual meaning of “arati” is end of desires. The process of reaching this stage is described in the process of “Arati”. In Arati there are actually five stages- (1) action with flower. The property of flower is odour. It symbolizes Mualdhar Chakra or Earth element. (2) Action with conch full of water which symbolizes water element or Swadhistan Chakra. (3) Action with lamp, which gives light. It symbolizes fire element or Manipur Chakra. (4) Action by blowing conch it symbolizes sound, air element or Anahata Chakra and (5) Action with Jhalar (fan), it symbolizes touch or ether element or Visudha Chakra. So the whole process indicates that one should do some action with all these charkas (Kriya) and when should he do this? – as indicated, between the junction of Day (Suriya Nadi – Pingala) and Night (Chandra nadi – Ida). This junction is Sushumna. The result of practicing it with devotion and love is also indicated in the process itself that the devotee will place himself in front of His Istha in Ajna Chakra. OM.
