This may be partly true. See the open letter from SRF to its membership in 1995 which gives details of the way the picture of Krishna was used in the early years.

Durga Mata claimed that P. Yogananda had indicated to her that Babaji was Krishna and that he (Yogananda) was Arjuna. Also in the writings of Lahiri Mahasaya there is a suggestion that "the old father" (Babaji) is Krishna.
