Subject: St. John Climacus - Early Christian hermit and yogi

St John (525-605) is called Climacus because of a treatise he wrote called The Ladder (Climax) of Paradise.

As a youth he studied under Saint Gregory Nazianzen and made such progress that he was known as a scholar. At the age of 16 however he turned away from the life of a religious scholar and went to Mount Sinai where he came under the instruction of a monk called Martyrius.

On the death of Martyrius, when John was 35 he retired to a more secluded life for the next 40 years.

At the age of 70 he was elected as Abbot of Mount Sinai a post he held for four years. According to his biographer "he dwelt on the mountain of God, and drew from the splendid treasure of his heart priceless riches of doctrine which he poured forth with wondrous abundance and benediction." A brother Abbot inspired him to write the rules by which he lived his life and he produced his treatise "The Ladder." When it was completed he retired again to solitude.

Of interest is the way that St John recognised the importance of breathing in spiritual practice.

"may the memory of Jesus be united to your breathing and then you shall know the value of peace."
