Subject: The Blood of St. Januarius

The Martyrdom of St Januarius - Girolamo Pesci

September 19th - Feast day of St Januarius.

St Januarius was the bishop of Benevento in Italy. During the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletianus, Januarius was arrested while visiting imprisoned christians. He was sentenced to death by being thrown to wild animals, but the beasts refused to attack the saint. Undeterred the authorities had him beheaded instead (305AD).

Some of his blood is said to have been preserved in a sealed glass vial. Every year the vial is taken out of it's storage at the Cathedral of Naples by the Archbishop, and the blood miraculously liquifies in full view of the congregation.

No record of the ceremony and miracle exists untill the year 1389, leading some to claim that the relic is a fake from the Middle Ages. Some scientists claim to have been able to manufacture a substance which behaved the same way as the blood of St Januarius using ingredients available in Italy during the 14th century.
