Paramahansa Yogananda - About Prayer

“When you pray to God, do it from the bottom of your soul. Tell what you truly feel and not what you think He would like you to feel. Be completely sincere towards Him, because there is no way you can hide your inner feelings from Him. An intense prayer gives you a very strong mental force. Your thoughts will then be focused and centred upon Him. Without honesty, this won’t happen. If you don’t feel any state of devotion, pray to Him like this: “God, help me love You.”

He is for you exactly what you really need and He will do for you much more than you can ever imagine.

More than anything, search Him for Himself, for His love. Ask Him: “Father, reveal Yourself to me!” If you ask Him to come to you in such a sincere way, He will certainly be always there for you.

Don’t ever pray with a beggar’s attitude. Don’t ever forget that you are a child of God. So, as such, you have a right to His treasures. Pray to Him and at the same time be sure that He is listening to you, because He will certainly fulfill all your prayers if you pray with love. (…)

A firm faith and love are the most important elements in prayer. (…)

How should you love God? Love Him as a poor man loves money, as a drowned man longs for a breath of air, as a man lost in the desert longs for a glass of water. Love Him with the enthusiasm of all lovers during their first love.

When you learn how to love Him from all your heart, then you will find Him. It is only then that you will be a true yogi, a human being who has reached the union with God.”
‘PRAY is... Go to your room and shut the door...make no fuss.Sit down and talk to God. Practice meditation. Let your mind become so intense that the next time you sit to meditate you won’t have to make effort.Pray to him: Lord you are the master of creation, so I come to you. I will never give up until you talk to me and make me realize your presence. I will not live without you...’

‘WHEN you have found it impossible to fulfill some urgent wish by your own effort, you turn to God in prayer. Thus evry prayer that you utter represents a desire. But when you find God, all desires vanish, and there is no need for prayer. I don’t pray. In fullfillmenrt of the wish or prayer for Him lies joy eternal..’

MOST people consider the course of events as natural and inevitable. They little know what radical change are possible through prayer. Every morning I offer my body, my mind and any ability that I posses, to be used by Thee, O infinite creator, in whatever way Thou dost choose to express Thyself through me. I know that all work is Thy work, and that no task is too difficult or too menial when offered to Thee in loving service.’
As a broken microphone cannot broadcast a message, so a restless mind cannot
transmit prayers to God.
Do not give up after one or two tries if God doesn't seem to respond. You
cannot get an answer merely by calling someone through a microphone and then
running away. So don't stop after one or two mental broadcasts; with
conscious effort and zeal, go on talking mentally to God, with ever
increasing longing in your heart.

Pray intelligently, with a bursting soul - not loudly, but mentally -
without displaying to anyone what is happening within. Pray with the utmost
devotion, knowing God is listening to every word flowing from your heart

Say to the Lord: "Please tell me Thy will." Don't say, "I want this and I want that," but have faith that He knows what you need. You will see that you get much better things when He chooses for you.
You must remove from your mind all doubt that God will answer. Most people don't get any response because of their disbelief. If you are absolutely determined that you are going to attain something, nothing can stop you. It is when you give up that you write the verdict against yourself. The man of success doesn't know the word "impossible
The secret of effective prayer is to change your status from beggar to child of God; when you appeal to Him from that consciousness, your prayer will have both power and wisdom. Develop the consciousness that God is with you. Give God the gems of prayer lying deep in the mine of your own heart.
