Even Zen makes use of images and idols (not the traditional god statues) like every other teaching. Vivekananda said paraphrased that as long as you worship in finite terms it is still idol worship.

If you concentrate on a statue or the infinite or think in non-dual terms it is still not the non-dual experience itself. The difference may be on conditioning, where those not raised in Hindu or Christian families may not like that kind of idolatry and adopt the Zen or Advaita Vedanta idolatry. Although Advaita Vedanta is not exactly idolatry (you can read P.Yogananda's explanation in the Gita for the difference between jnana yoga and bhakti yoga)
