歌曲(song)本身只是音樂, 以旋律吸引聽眾. 歌詞在一首歌裡無論它寫得再好, 亦擺脫不了它的陪襯角色. 好聽的旋律配上爛詞一樣會大受歡迎, 配上了好詞則令原有的旋律更受人注意. 所以, 林夕成功之處就是做為一個詞的工匠, 他巧妙地把兩者結合, 在某些歌裡更發揮了他詩人填詞的本色, 可謂能人所不能. 歌詞本身確實是一種詩歌, 唯工夫未到家或沒有足夠語言觸覺的填詞人就不能令其成詩.
但無論如何, 歌詞都不能取代純詩. 之所以歌詞較受歡迎是因為它結合了音樂, 但它的優點亦是一種缺點, 音樂對它是一種催化劑亦是它的枷鎖. 受了枷鎖的局限很多時候人們才填不出好詞. 以此類推, 詩的格式亦是它的枷鎖. 很多只懂得因循舊形式的人一直揚稱要為新詩去尋找一個既定的格式. 詩如水, 詩人以物盛水令其成形. 如果找來一個小杯子硬說是最好的盛載物, 只有倒進去的水才是水. 那種想法簡直就是自己騙自己的愚昧無知. 能者御水自如, 無能者只見其形, 以為形為水, 然後喃喃自語無形非水, 是為一大笑話.
做為詩作人,這點不能不慎, 不能不察, 否則會在創作的路上作繭自縛.
