Okay.

"Where to begin?"

Some basics first I suppose.

It was a two-hour episode, with a fair dose of action, character development, everything you would expect from a series-pilot.

The episode revolves around an (illegal) deep space salvage operation that the crew carries out, and their efforts to offload the alliance-stamped goods they aquire. Shepherd Book, Simon & River all make their way aboard ship as the episode progresses.

I'm not quite sure how to do a summary without totally spoiling everyone, but there are some nice scenes with the Reavers, Alliance, that dodgy bloke Badger (That line about Persophone(note to self, spelling = goot) becoming their second home in "Shindig" starts to make a little sense from this) and several other 'factions', plus all the usual inter-character development you'd expect from a pilot.

Typically Jossian, there's several foreshadowish conversations, one between Mal & Jayne being quite relevant to the events of 'Ariel'.

If anyone wants to be utterly spoiled, I could write a sparse wildfeed I suppose :-)
