I laughed at the first part of the torture scene too - it was a great idea to have them continue their arguement in between shocks. I think I laughed also because it was a releif to see some comic stuff in a scene that had so much tension working in it - both with Wash's marital issues and with, you know, them being captured and tortured.

But then, when Wash started drifting off from the shocks, it became apparent that Mal was trying to keeep the argument going mostly just to take Wash's mind off the pain and keep him alive. I was really moved by that. In every episode we see more great leadership skills in Mal - he's becoming a really well developed character.
