Thanks, CW, for seeing my point rather than seizing on my not thinking things through too well as to which eps could reasonably be strung together. I was considering the major plot points rather than some of the minor connectors, but I forgot some of the major ones too. But you got the point...

I just have this feeling that if we had started out with the ship, the crew, and some mostly space-borne adventure and had slowly been introduced to the planetary societies, it would have worked better.

Gotta say, Early was the first really A-level villain we've been given on the show, and that's an important feature in a Whedon production. A Niska-like Master would have seriously impaired season one Buffy.
